Halloween 2018 Mask Rehaul Tips

I’ve been trying to repaint my TOTS H18 mask and was hoping to see if any of you guys have any tips or techniques that all of us can share. Also if you can, send a pic and we can see what techniques work best. We can find out what the best paint and liquid latex works. Along with how to get the best details out of the mold. Perhaps ways of getting the base paint off since I’m having difficulty with that. Looking forward to seeing what you guys did.

I use oil paints, rubber cement, and thinners as my paint. I like to start mine by doing dark base coats of black, brown, and some yellows. I let this dry completely for a few hours. Once it’s dried I take a rag with some thinners on it and give the mask a good wipe down which removes most of the paint I just put on with the exception of all the cracks and details. Then I start dry brushing white over most of the mask followed by some minor dry brushing with browns, blacks, and yellows in certain areas. This is my end result and I’m happy with it.

Acrylics mixed with liquid latex works just fine. Just use water to dilute the paints. No need spending all that money on oils and thinners…

I’ve just heard many stories of people having issues with using liquid latex mixed with acrylics. Some have zero issues with it and some have issues with it peeling. I spent maybe $35 for all my supplies to make the paints I use and honestly I have more than I know what to do with. Could easily knock out 10 or more masks with the paints I bought. If you want to write up your own tips by all means go ahead. I was just responding to a post for someone asking for advice and this is what has worked well for me.

The reason why the paint doesn’t stick is because the surface of the mask hasn’t been properly cleaned and prepped. It can happen both with the raw casting if it has been sitting around for awhile, or with the existing paint. VM&P naphtha definitely helps new latex bite into the old. I’ve never had any problems just using that and latex paints. Both methods work well, it’s just a matter of preference. I prefer the latex paint and naphtha method just cause I don’t like smelling solvents the whole time.

I been desperately trying to get a good paint scheme and way of doing it but idk in some light I think it looks good and worn in my bathroom mirror I seem to hate it.

Are you basing this mask off the pictures of the mask on the Mannequin in the class case?

Im basing it off the Chris Nelson mask at HorrorHound, but not sticking to it. Basically going with whatever works and I can pull off… or not pull off, hah.

Any luck getting the stock paint off? I am finding it almost impossible. The one I did last year peeled off easily. Anyone else have tips on removing the stock paint?

any tips on re-hairing the mask?
