People were gasping loudly when he killed the kid. I think that’s the first time I can recall a slasher movie killing a child. The filmmakers cemented Myers in this movie as the ultimate killing machine. Which we already knew Random, no reason or sense to it, just a machine doing what he does. Kill.
And to be fair that kid wasn’t exactly a baby either. What was he, probably 13 or so? I was surprised he killed him, sure, but not upset he did. I’m glad he didn’t kill the infant because it may have been too much and it added so much more suspense when he walked off.
I’m in the minority here, but the doctor scene didn’t bother me too much. I completely understood it and saw it coming well before the twist because of the way he coddled MM in his dialogue. I saw him as a person that took his obession father than Loomis. Loomis’ obsession went one way, and Sartain’s went into a much darker place. Loomis wanted to stop him, Sartain wanted to be him. I also enjoyed his voice. It was gravelly enough to remind me of Loomis. That subplot reminded me of this hypnotic effect that Myers can have on some. He wanted to understand him so badly, he would attempt the unspeakable to unravel another piece of the mystery.
I saw it with a group of friends and family last night. This was definitely the best Halloween sequel for me. I liked it, didn’t love it, but it was close. Loved the feel of the original, and I am so glad Carpenter was involved in this one (thank God Zombies is now in the history books lol.). Castle did a great job playing Myers. I enjoyed it.
Does anyone think that MM didn’t even know or care about LS? It felt like she wasn’t a concern at all, and even in the end I wasn’t sure if he even remembered her or knew who she was.
It felt like he was just out to kill anything in his path and ended up at Strodes house lol… Strode was definitely out for him though. The window scene was chilling, that’s where I felt Michael’s connection with her…
Don’t think he was specifically targeting Laurie, it was more like she was targeting him. Even after the mirror scene he leaves the house and doesn’t go after her
I’d say this is the second or third best film in the franchise. I always thought H2 was a little overrated.
I’ve never been a Halloween superfan so I didn’t need it to deliver intense nostalgia going in. I think the movie did what it was supposed to: continue where H1 left off, bring those characters back without all the baggage left by the sequels and give us a Michael/Laurie rematch. It lacked the slow build and subtleties of the original, but you can’t just make H1 again. The important thing is it gave us The Shape again, free of the curse of Thorn nonsense and the stripper mom and all that. I’d give it an 8/10.
I thought this movie felt like Michael’s revenge. As if he decided knocking off a couple of teenagers for kicks wasn’t enough. He was getting revenge on the town that stopped his fun for 40 years.
Overall, I thought it was a great addition to the franchise. For me, it ranks as the best of the sequels, easily.
That said, I did have a few complaints…
The first complaint is what they did with Dr. Sartain. I actually enjoyed the actor, very much! I just wish he was given something better to work with.
The second issue was that a few of the kills and/or shots of the aftermath of some murders were particularly gruesome, which was perfectly fine! The problem was that, in comparison, it made many of the other deaths seem quite dull.
My final complaint was a scene where a character is being attacked and another character yells, “Oh shit!”. The way this reaction played out was purely for intentional comedy in a scene that should NOT have been comedic and it really ruined the vibe of that particular scene.
Everything else about the movie, I loved! Yes, even the teens. They had their flaws but none of them ever did anything to make me WANT them to die. And that’s a first for me, in a film like this. In fact, the only person I WANTED to die was the doctor. Additionally, JLC was (unsurprisingly) amazing in her return to Halloween and JJC played The Shape perfectly! I would not change a single thing about his performance.
Bottom line is it’s awesome and I cannot wait to see it again this week!
Been thinking more about the movie over the weekend and read all the comments, and I think the people who are saying that this was much more of a revenge against the people of Haddonfield are spot on. I think I was reading too much into the Laurie/Michael thing. She was a random target in ‘78 because he happened to see her come to the Myers house and fixated on her. As a result there was a purpose in his ‘78 murders. With the removal of the familial link, there would be no specific reason for him to target her again, and therefore the killings in the new movie are just random, until Sultain forces the two of them together again.
