Just wondering which one you guys prefer and why? For me it would be H18 (Virginia Gardner ), but I did love the flashback back scenes in HK, which was about the only thing I liked about it

H18 just had better pacing, dialogue, and atmosphere than kills. Loved the flashback but the dialogue was absolute garbage. Don’t know how a million dollar company allowed some of those lines through. Some of the acting was pretty bad too. Kills has many good moments but wasn’t as solid of a film overall.
H18 for me I guess. I simply like the look of the mask better.
Halloween 2018 structures itself as a better film and sequel, retaining itself to the simple story of Michael’s been away 40 years and now he’s back. If there’s one thing I can compliment DGG and DMB on, it’s the simplicity of H18’s premise, and how well it delivers on it. Michael is scary again, you feel for people’s deaths a little more, and the violence and gore, while present, isn’t gratuitous. As already stated, it paces itself and its dialogue very well. Is it the best Halloween? No. Is it the best Halloween Sequel? I think it is.
HKills by comparison is a gorehound’s fest. It turns Michael from a calculating stalker to an angry Tyler Mane wannabe with how gratuitously brutal the kills are. The only ones that managed to male me squirm were the deaths of Nurse Marion, and the old couple. Every kill in 2018 made me squirm by comparison. This is because of how he does the kills. He does them in a brutal, but very efficient manner that doesn’t go over the top. Seeing how he decorates his corpses too was also fantastic. HKills was also not tightly paced, and the dialogue & story feels like it was made by a cheap fanfiction writer who got to come in from the Make A Wish foundation. The only thing that it got right was Michael, and even then only in terms of mannerism and motivation. Wanting to just go home.was an inspired choice. Wanting to stare out the window raises more questions than answers about Michael and why. 2018 brought back the random and dispassionate nature of the Shape and his killings. Kills brought in a motivation that fit with that.
Tl;dr H18 is a tighter, better-structured film. The Sartain twist is iffy, and gives Michael plot contrivance to get him to Laurie, but otherwise is solid enough to stand on its own. HKills is a badly-structured film that sounds and paces itself like a poorly written fanfiction and doesn’t stand the test of time on its own. Both do Michael exceptionally well though, and both deserve the accolade of making the Shape scary.
