Halloween 3D Halts Production

wholefnshow claims the last TWO movies are the reason we are in this scenario, never mind the 1st zombie flick is the highest grossing in the series…

The original was considered one of the highest grossing independent movies of all time for a while. It’s still in the top ten at least to this day. There’s a reason for that. It cost $300,000 and made around $50 million. The remake cost $15 million and made $80 million. The original will always be the most profitable film in the series. That’s not even including the marketing for the new remake… the original’s marketing was the distributors literally taking it from state to state, letting it build in momentum. Something that Paranormal Activity is trying to do right now. It’s a rare strategy but if the film is good enough, it could make a distributor much more money without having to nearly as much on publicity and marketing.

It’s not always about how high the number is but what it does in relation to the budget. You can try to say the remake was the highest grossing but it’s simply not true because you’re discounting the actual math behind successful hits. Superman Returns was considered a dud because it made only $200 million in the North America when the budget was above that. It made its money internationally but what most companies really want is big returns in the states because a lot of the profit overseas stays there. It doesn’t all come back to the producers’ pockets.

Darkly, once again, is correct beyond comprehension. He’s in the business, thus he would know how it works.

True Horror,

Yes sir, we are in this position due to RZH and H2. RZH made good money based on the brand alone, everyone knows what Halloween is and people were buying tickets based on that and simple human curiosity. Everyone wanted to see what the remake would be like, perfectly understandable.

However, the reviews for it were horrendous as well, just like H2. Only thing is, when it came time for H2, the majority of people who saw RZH knew what to expect from Zombie and decided to sit this new one out. And boy did they ever sit it out LOL! Opened in 3rd, then dropped to 6th in it’s third week, then subsiquently 14th in week 3. Going from nearly 4000 screens to 400 in a total of 3 weeks, THAT is why we’re in limbo right now.

Sad, but true.

In all honesty…this arugement is getting sooooooo old. Please check out the website below. It does the math for you. And just in case you don’t want to research it…it boils down to this:

Halloween made 50 million with a budget of $300,000…average ticket cost was $2.34. Divide 50 million by 2.34 and let me know what that equals.

RZH made 58 million with an average ticket price of $6.88. After you do the equation above it might be apparent to you that it was not the highest grossing in the series. Far from it. We can even go as far as to prove how Halloween Ressurection actually out- performed RZH2 at the box office if you really want.

Seriously…do some homework

I wont argue against that, but you cant blame this on the last one, maybe H2…the weinsteins also need to look at themselves also. They dropped this movie at a really bad time in the midst of alot of releases and even though I love HALLOWEEN as a series, I knew it would get outperformed by FD 3D. Had that not come out the same weekend, I would think it would have added at least another 7 million or more to the opening. But regardless i dont care anymore, I got 2 movies I enjoyed.

Show, you obviously have friends/relatives in the business, and I do see value in (and appreciate) a lot of the things you post here. Heck, your news about Neve Campbell and Scream 4 made me smile all weekend. That said, you have a very condescending delivery that does really polarize a lot of people (insults, the “LOL!” at the end of lots of points, etc.). I understand that some people have come after you in PMs, but that is why they are private. Statements like “you obviously don’t know what you are talking about” sound like they are coming from someone sitting in a high throne sipping cognac and wearing a monacle.

You have information that I feel is legit (even though things always change at the drop of a hat) that I do enjoy reading, and for that, I say thanks. I just wish you relayed the information with a different tone. I think if that happened, the crappy PMs would diminish greatly.

I got that information from Box Office Mojo. I’m not inside the movie biz as some of you guys seem to be. Unless you’re just getting different info from different websites. I’ve also read interviews where this similar dollor figure was sited as the total budget. But as I’ve said before box office take does not speak to film quality exclusively and certainly says nothing of its merits. Other films that have made squat I still consider successes in where it counts, story.

H3D getting shelved, apparently, is very funny though.

Just make another movie, maybe New Line can buy the right and we can have a Myers VS Jason flick I’m sure everyone wants to see.

Bump

im not sure about anyone else on here but i would love to see a freddy vs jason 2 and add michael to it.

Ummm, no.

We don’t need any more “suedo horror-comedies” like Freddy VS Jason.

I beg to differ. Check out Zombieland!!! I do agree that we don’t need to mix the characters together at all.

I don’t catagorize “Zombie” movies as Horror, I give them their own catagory. Zombie movies are too good to be lumped into one genre, they deserve their own.

Zombieland will be funny as hell.

well we agree here wholeshow, leave the UFC out of horror films. i care nothing about seeing my favorite horror icons square off against each other.
freddy vs jason is like Halloween resurrection in that they both remind me of a “Scary Movie” comedy type spin off.

Amen brother!

Look its 3-D and it might not even be in the continuity of RZ or the originals possibly another re-boot in the vein of The Hulk, do you really think its gonna be something to fuss about? Meh, who knows maybe it’ll turn out to be amazing, but I doubt it

Man, you freaking read my mind…that to me was the biggest flaw in H2. Rob for some reason loses all faith in his script and constantly ditches it in favor of last-minute ad-libs. To him that may seem more “honest” or “real,” but it felt like I was watching a rehearsal or blooper reel.

Here’s something to ponder.

H2=Brand recognition. 30 years worth of known hype given the series is a household name. Backing of a major studio and production house to create, shoot, develope spfx etc.

Total gross since it’s release on August 28th=$32 million, on a budget near $40 million.

Paranormal Activity=ZERO brand recognition. No hype outside of a few weeks of TV campaigning, and nothing close to a household name. With ZERO name actors.

Total gross in 2 weeks of release (Week 1 EXTREMELY limited release, and week 2 fairly limited release nationwide, but in select theaters only)=$33.7 million, on a budget of ONLY $11,000.00!!! Yes, ELEVEN THOUSAND DOLLARS T O T A L !

A movie with zero name actors (4 cast members in total, and one stunt man) on a budget of 11k, with no brand name recognition DESTROYED H2 inside of 2 weeks. One of said weeks, was in severely limited release and the other week in select theaters only.

And some of you are convinced that a Halloween movie can’t do well on the dime? Bravo experts LOL!

Keep Zombie away from it alltogether, shoot it in 3d, and tie it in with some of the story and characters from H3 season of the witch. Michael Myers fighting off Dick Warlock androids…Fricking awesome!!! I’m sure this will sound like a bad idea to some, but I think it would be something I would go and see.
