Halloween 4 Mask Analysis Thread

So after getting involved in the discussion over at https://forum.michael-myers.net/t/original-and-non-converted-kirk-mask-in-halloween-4/44614/1 and wondering myself for a long time about where the different Halloween masks came from, I examined miscellaneous photos and my own DVD screencaps to see which masks were the same, which were different, ect.

The thread above explains where the unconverted, ‘Kirk’ mask came from, that it was a spare mask from Halloween II that wasn’t used, but the question still remains as to what masks were used in the film. So I thought I’d start a thread debating the possibilities

Here’s my own research…
(if the image is too small, I apologise, I had it zoomed in when I created it, just zoom in on your browser by pressing Crtl and the + button)

From this, I’ve pieced these four ‘groups’ of masks together.
Remember, these are just my opinions and guesses, I can’t say for sure that these are factually correct…

THE ‘KIRK’

Very strong Captain Kirk / William Shatner facial features and details. Might be a recast of the '75 Kirk, or the actual thing.

Very different hairstyle, eyebrows and detailed facial features compared to the ‘Hero’.

Whilst I said in the chart that the Schoolhouse ‘Kirk’ has smooth features, it’s important to remember that we see the mask under flat lighting, and the mask is blurry because the scene goes by so fast, whereas the Kelly Kill mask is under lighting which picks out the details.

THE ‘HERO’

The typical Halloween 4 mask everyone knows. Eyecuts were enlarged over time for improved visibility.
Definitive eyebrows, hairstyle, facial features and smoothness / lack of detail. Has Captain Kirk features but they are much less detailed than the ‘Kirk’ mask above.

THE ‘PROMO’

A mask used in promotional pictures. Very different eyecuts to the ‘Hero’. Lots of wild hair. Neck extension.

THE ‘UNKNOWN’

A group of masks I can’t tie/connect.

  • The discount mart mask has smaller eyeholes than the flesh coloured ‘Kirk’ seen in the schoolhouse and much less facial detail. Light brown hair. Brown stains OR skin tone marks on the face. Odd eyebrows.
  • The two prankster masks are very hard to examine.
The one on the left has very wild hair, and resembles the masks used on the original Halloween.
The one on the right has similar hair as the ‘Promo’ mask, could very well be the same.

I hope this has been fun to read, and comment with your own views and thoughts please!

Bump!

Probably only the person responsible for the masks on H4 could answer the majority of your questions.

Yeah I know, like I said for now this is just speculation haha :stuck_out_tongue:

Enjoyable reading and nice seeing the references pooled like this. :sunglasses:

The promo mask is the Hero

I was wondering if the mask we first see in the drug store was the Hero? Right when Danielle steps into the costume section. Has much bigger eyes than the one the Shape actually grabs. :bulb:

Also when the Shape is pulling the mask on, you can see that it’s a different mask…Has a slit in the mouth. The scene cuts to Danielle screaming and then cuts back to the Shape and it’s the Hero.

You forgot the stunt mask that was used when the shape crashes his head to the windshield :sunglasses:

Great read mate, i always really enjoy reading topics like this one :sunglasses:
Really liked the way you mapped all this out along with your thoughts and imput etc
Big thanks to K man also for his input
Love Halloween 4!! :sunglasses:

Couldn’t say it any better myself. While I am trying to avoid stepping into the sequel realm with masks I’ll always treasure my lil’ Jamie Lloyd costume

I love reading posts like this, because I’m terrible at spotting these things in films haha.

I really wasn’t sure about the promo because the eye cuts look so much different in shape, and the hair looks much longer, wilder and darker :stuck_out_tongue:

And I was considering putting the stunt mask in but I decided against it eventually. One thing to note about that is that it has seemingly one large, circular eyehole and one small and wide eyehole…

Thanks again Kaizu, and everyone for contributing. I’m trying to pool research for an article about the mystery of the H4 masks

Good job and interesting ready. Unfortunately, the mask and movie still suck.

“You can’t kill trolling mister, it don’t die like a man dies.”

Umm. I meant “read.” This is what happens when posting after a few too many Bud Lights. My bad.
Again, good job and although the H4 movie and mask were $%$# this was a really interesting “read.” Still don’t quite understand why they wouldn’t just make the mask look like the original.

Thanks for a well researched and presented piece. I’m looking forward to the final article. You might even want to include the cover mask in your discussion as its origins are pretty interesting as well.

Haha that’s a really good idea, I’ll get writing just after Boxing Day.

Again, thanks all of you for your comments and opinions, they’re all welcome

I think you did a great job classifying the masks =) There seem to be a lot of different ones and it is quite confusing. Why so many? who knows! But great job.

The H4 HERO mask with little eyes and big could be one in the same. I mean sequences in the film are randomly shot the sots with the smaller eyes could have been shot and than at some point they wanted bigger eye holes - could have been from a camera point of view , the actor and or stunt man needed to see better or the director wanted bigger cuts out of preference - and eventually the shots you see with bigger eye cuts were the end result of that decision

Sorry I never got round to the article, college work kinda got in the way. I’ll definitely get onto it soon!

Very awesome read!
