So after getting involved in the discussion over at https://forum.michael-myers.net/t/original-and-non-converted-kirk-mask-in-halloween-4/44614/1 and wondering myself for a long time about where the different Halloween masks came from, I examined miscellaneous photos and my own DVD screencaps to see which masks were the same, which were different, ect.
The thread above explains where the unconverted, ‘Kirk’ mask came from, that it was a spare mask from Halloween II that wasn’t used, but the question still remains as to what masks were used in the film. So I thought I’d start a thread debating the possibilities
Here’s my own research…
(if the image is too small, I apologise, I had it zoomed in when I created it, just zoom in on your browser by pressing Crtl and the + button)
From this, I’ve pieced these four ‘groups’ of masks together.
Remember, these are just my opinions and guesses, I can’t say for sure that these are factually correct…
THE ‘KIRK’
Very strong Captain Kirk / William Shatner facial features and details. Might be a recast of the '75 Kirk, or the actual thing.
Very different hairstyle, eyebrows and detailed facial features compared to the ‘Hero’.
Whilst I said in the chart that the Schoolhouse ‘Kirk’ has smooth features, it’s important to remember that we see the mask under flat lighting, and the mask is blurry because the scene goes by so fast, whereas the Kelly Kill mask is under lighting which picks out the details.
THE ‘HERO’
The typical Halloween 4 mask everyone knows. Eyecuts were enlarged over time for improved visibility.
Definitive eyebrows, hairstyle, facial features and smoothness / lack of detail. Has Captain Kirk features but they are much less detailed than the ‘Kirk’ mask above.
THE ‘PROMO’
A mask used in promotional pictures. Very different eyecuts to the ‘Hero’. Lots of wild hair. Neck extension.
THE ‘UNKNOWN’
A group of masks I can’t tie/connect.
- The discount mart mask has smaller eyeholes than the flesh coloured ‘Kirk’ seen in the schoolhouse and much less facial detail. Light brown hair. Brown stains OR skin tone marks on the face. Odd eyebrows.
- The two prankster masks are very hard to examine.
The one on the left has very wild hair, and resembles the masks used on the original Halloween.
The one on the right has similar hair as the ‘Promo’ mask, could very well be the same.
I hope this has been fun to read, and comment with your own views and thoughts please!
