I’m gonna go ahead and quote Ranshiie and Mr. Conal Cochran since they were particularly interested in this:
So pretty recently I was reviewing the definitive guide, seeing where I could make changes or updates. One thing I was checking up on were the knives (H2 elrod knives V1 and V2, H5,). That, along with the aforementioned members peaking my curiosity, and the recent discovery of the H4 knife I thought I’d check into them all, so I began taking some blu ray shots of the knives in each film.
The H5 was very apparently not a dexter, as long thought. The tapered handle shape was one dead giveaway, as well as the “lip” that you can see nearing the bolster, neither of which are apparent on most (or any, to my searching) Dexters:
So with that I took a look at some old vintage chefs knifes and thought for sure I’d found it with a vintage Gustav Emil Ern knife:
But obviously a handle shape is far from a definitive match, so I went frame by frame whenever the knife was shown, trying to find any kind of stamp. What I found next really surprised me!! Check out when Michael stabs the knife into the laundry chute:
Does that logo look familiar? It should! It’s an F. Herder ABR Sohn Germany stamp on a 10 inch knife. The exact same as the H4 knife!!
There is even a shot where we can see the “102-10” stamp (which I’ll upload tomorrow).
So there we have the H5 knife brand! Honestly, I also think that they may have used the screen used H4 knife for H5. They definitely didn’t use the same knife for continuity purposes, and I’d be absolutely stunned if it were coincidence that H5 production picked a knife at random that ended up to be the same rare brand and size knife as used in H4 production.
There are a few prop guys I’m gonna reach out to to get some more info on that, and I’ll also be trying to match some scratches, grime, or marks to confirm that theory. More on that coming!!
Enjoy!
