In an interview with the writers they said that they would have used an original mask for the whole movie. Not the same mask from the night in 78 but a new one stolen from a store.
Well it would still have been the white mask of some sort or other. In the screenplay it is described as THE MASK and during one kill in a costume store it reads as “Harry looks up seeing MICHAEL before him. Black jump suit on. Iconic mask over his face…”
This was also a nod to the “Harry Grimbridge” character from Halloween III who owns the costume store and is killed in the opening scene of ‘Season of the Witch’
Yeah just saying it didn’t say Shatner specifically, ‘’‘THE mask’’ could certainly mean just a Michael Myers mask, No question it was gonna be a white mask regardless
No, I wouldn’t have preferred it to H18 personally. The script has nothing to say or really interesting about it, it’s just a gory slasher movie. It isn’t a good script in terms of characterization or plot, and would’ve probably crashed and burned on release due to both critical reception and the fact not as many people would go see it without JLC.
Harsh, I know, but don’t get me wrong, I like the script for what it is. It’s fun in the late 80s H4 and H5 sort of way with a focus on kills, chase scenes, and gore. The plot is your standard goofy Thorn Trilogy style stuff, and I have no doubt I would’ve really enjoyed it purely as a Halloween fan and a sucker for that kind of stuff. Yet, I don’t think I would’ve liked it as much as H18, which to me, felt like a real attempt to take Halloween back to the kind of respect the first movie had, regardless of what diehard fan opinion may be on what constitutes that. I think it succeeded, and Halloween has never been in a better place than it is now in terms of franchise potential and the people involved. Say what you will about JLC being in the movie, the humor, etc but it’s a modern Halloween movie, and as a modern introduction to the franchise it works well for modern audiences, fans, and critics.
I think for those less than pleased with aspects of H18, Halloween Kills will probably be more in line with what you want. That entire movie is mostly chase, gore, and atmosphere while still building on pre-established characters.
Halloween 2018 could have been amazing if simplified. There was probably too much happening in one movie and it degraded the opportunity to flesh out characters. A few years back I watched the movie “Hush” and I remember thinking that this could make a really good “Halloween” movie. It was back to basics. It showed that you can still make a horror movie with tension and suspense. Like Halloween '78. A clever script simply disarmed the protagonist and the killer was cunning. Something similar could have been done with Halloween. Laurie alone and her house is suddenly under siege from Michael. 85 minutes of terror, cat and mouse and one trying to outwit the other. This would be a Halloween movie I’d love to see. It doesn’t need to have humour to be modern. Hush had no humour. It was dark and plot driven. It knew what it was. Horror and suspense like H78. Humour in horror should be organic to the moment. Not dropped in because it felt good on the day.
I agree with this heavily…I dont think returns wouldve been met with that bad of reviews…IMO the characters in 2018 are almost laughable… Including Laurie…I dug the movie sure…It did not feel like a classic Halloween though…Laurie was an absolute bafoon…H20 was even a better Laurie movie than this lol…Shes a gun toting psycho now who WANTS michael to come after her but at the same time barricades her house lol…Love Nelson but the fx lacked…Too many off screen Kills which absolutely do not work in this generation IMO…Dont need gore but also don’t want to imagine whats going on or what happened…Michael just so happens to be getting transferred the day before a crucial anniversary, Also just so happens to get THE mask out of a trunk…Which is absolutely a Rob Zombie deal rather then having him pick up a white one…JJC was a good Michael Myers, At the same time it is a very poor representation of an aged Nick Castle…Courtney is way taller…I could go on and on…It was time for a fresh take on Michael…We got that but would’ve been a much better tale if Returns was what they went with.
