This is usually how it goes with franchises…a film releases and is disliked, then the next film releases, and is even worse. So naturally over time, people look back at that first film and appreciate it more simply because it’s the better of the two, even if it’s still not great. It’s all about hindsight.
That’s exactly what happened. I did a Halloween franchise marathon earlier this year, and it made me realize that 2018 isn’t as bad as I thought. It’s still not a good movie, but it does have several elements I like though.
There’s very little I like about Kills.
Besides some pieces of music, and Kyle Richards who’s barely in the movie, there was nothing else I liked about it.
I would give it a 7.5 out of 10. I love it but it does have a few problems like Warlock’s performance, and sidelining Laurie for 2/3 of the movie. Overall I love the movie.
I always put Warlocks performance down to the fact that Myers was shot 6 times, stabbed with a knife, coat hanger to the eye, and then fell of a balcony. Al this would slow him down a little.
funny you say this about h40 because I recently rewatched a movie a detested in my youth-h4- and actually enjoyed it a lot more this time around. I would go so far as to say it would be one of the more beloved sequels if it had used a mask with Kirk lineage and a better actor.
I was extremely excited to see it, especially thinking Nick Castle had returned as The Shape. Thought they had finally gotten the formula right again. I was hoping that it would end up being my favorite sequel. Overall I was pretty disappointed. Those feelings have not changed. The only Halloween films I’ll re-watch are the original and Halloween II.
They did for a while. When I first saw it, I thought it was extremely overhyped and pretty bland. When I rewatched it the first few times on Blu-ray, I fell in love with it and it cracked my top five. Over the last couple years though, it’s back to being a bland and disappointing sequel that happens to have a great Myers portrayal and score. Damn shame about the script.
When the movie was first announced, I was really excited, especially when they reported that Jamie Lee Curtis, John Carpenter, and Nick Castle were all returning. And on top of that, it was reported to be a sequel to Halloween 2 just like H20 was.
However my excitement started to slowly disappear as more and more information was released about the film.
When they revealed that it wasn’t a sequel to Halloween 2, I started to question why bring Jamie Lee Curtis back then. It didn’t make any sense to have her in the movie.
When the first picture of the mask was released, I was actually really irritated. The mask having wrinkles looks dumb, and doesn’t make any sense, since latex doesn’t age like human skin. To this day I’m still annoyed about it.
And they started talking about Michael being a normal person in this movie, and not supernatural. How would he survive fatal wounds, while also continuing to kill people like none of it matters, especially since he’s in his 60s now. It was ridiculous.
And they kept making it seem like Nick Castle was gonna play Michael for the whole movie. There was even a video of him getting into shape for the role. But turns out he just had a two second cameo. I can’t even begin to tell you how cheated I felt.
The trailers and tv spots didn’t really do much for me. I just thought they were ok.
When the movie came out, I went to the theater with one of my friends. Despite all of the terrible things I kept hearing about the movie, I still went in with an open mind, and hoping it would be good. Unfortunately it turned out the movie was terrible.
The very first scene with the screaming podcasters is one of the worst openings I’ve ever seen while watching a movie in a theater. It almost made me want to walk out.
Besides the babysitter, the little kid, and Hawkins. None of the other characters were likable or interesting.
The podcasters are some of the most obnoxious movie characters I’ve ever seen. I hate them with a passion, and was glad Michael killed them. No matter how many times I rewatch the movie, I can’t stand their scenes.
The fat friend was extremely annoying, and got on my nerves. He completely ruined the motion sensor scene because he wouldn’t shut up.
Karen was bland and unlikable. Judy’s monotone acting didn’t help either.
Allyson felt completely pointless.
Laurie was basically a cross between Sarah Connor, and the crazy cat lady from The Simpsons.
The evil doctor subplot didn’t need to exist. They could’ve just had Michael escape the bus on his own, and chase Allyson to Laurie’s house for the final act. It was really easy to fix.
The other characters aren’t worth mentioning.
The dialogue always makes me cringe, it’s one of the worst things about the movie.
The third act fell completely flat for me, and the ending felt anticlimactic. The exact thought that popped into my head was, That’s it?
The writing overall was just horrible.
I thought JJC’s performance as Michael was alright. He was a little stiff in his upper body, but I thought he did an ok job. It still could’ve been better though.
The music I actually really liked. I’ve listened to that music a lot these past few years. It’s really good.
The bathroom scene was satisfying, mostly because I hated the podcasters so much.
The closet scene was great.
Vicky was the best character in the movie, and she should’ve had a bigger role.
The idea of the motion sensor scene was actually neat. Unfortunately Oscar ruined it. Still the idea for it was cool.
The movie had some cool visuals here and there.
I used to give 2018 a 1 out of 10. However after rewatching it recently, I would probably give it a 3.5 out of 10.
