Having serious Halloween withdrawals and had a lackluster season...

I’ve loved Halloween as long as I can remember. Nothing beats wearing a costume and becoming someone (or something else) for one night and getting candy in the process. I always loved the decorations, Halloween specials and series on TV, and the time of year itself. I wasn’t always a huge horror movie fan but began to get into horror around about 1996. I was born in 76, so I was familiar with and had seen pieces of the Halloween, Nightmare, and F13 films, but was more into sci-fi and superhero stuff. Scream and particularly, the Ghostface mask, got me heavily into horror and Halloween even more so. I began collecting Ghostface masks and my then-fiance and I began throwing an annual Halloween party.

Though I enjoyed the first two Scream movies, they were really just gateways to the truly classic stuff. Watching Carpenter’s Halloween was a revelation. I’d seen parts here and there and new the mask and the score, but I’d never seen the entire film. I became a diehard fan of Carpenter’s film and eventually found my way here. I lurked for years but joined up after getting my first Myers mask, the first run of H2s.

I share all of this to set up the point of this thread. I’ve never cared for any of the sequels to Halloween with the exception of H20, which I still feel is slightly better than the new movie. I was still thrilled that we were getting a new film and that it would not only skip all the other sequels but would also involve JLC and Carpenter. I was also excited that TOTS would have the official mask and couldn’t wait to wear it for Halloween night this year.

That was the first of the disappointments of this Halloween season. I received the mask on October 1st and despite hearing it was small, held out hope that it would fit. I was crushed to find that it wouldn’t possibly fit comfortably for a few minutes, much less a few hours on Halloween night. I’ve gone as The Shape the last few years with my H2 and was looking forward to wearing the new mask. There was never an option for me to find it in stores and hopefully snag a bigger copy, so my Halloween night plans were dashed. I held out hope that the movie would be good but was disappointed that it came so close to being great but ultimately fell flat, at least for me.

That left me with Halloween night. At least I’d be able to stalk the streets of our neighborhood as The Shape. I put on my coveralls only to find that they were huge. I’d lost some weight but didn’t realize just how much. I looked ridiculous outside of my H2 and decided to go with Jason instead. It was great but the humidity and an approaching storm kept lots of people indoors in our neighborhood. Last year was terrific. It was cold and there were tons of people out along with a haunted house and tables set up at some houses with drinks for the adults. My Shape outfit was a hit and I scared more than a few kids and adults.

I just felt that this year was a series of disappointments and wish I could get a Halloween do-over. Not to mention the fact that Christmas is everywhere you go and next year seems so far away. Outside of you guys and some friends in other parts of the country, I don’t know anyone else who loves Halloween season and Myers. I’m just feeling the post-Halloween blues and wanted to vent. Thanks to anyone who reads all of this!

Sorry you had a bad year. I’ve never cared much for Christmas. Just too “happy” and commercialized for what it’s really supposed to be.

I actually had a pretty good Halloween after a few disappointing ones, so it’s the ebb and flow. Our weather was perfect so my fog and fog chiller worked perfectly.

I’m also depressed (again) now that it’s over.

Here’s a quick video of my yard, I set it all up and tore it all down Oct 31. yes, I was exhausted. I’m sure you’ll have a better season next year, we all have bad ones sometimes. And I love Halloween more than pretty much anything, I’m already planning some things for next year…

This is what I hope to build for next year, an RC controlled Billy on a trike! I just found a trike at Goodwill for $4 lol

I’m sure you (and I) will get amped up again for the holiday around July next year!

I know what you mean man, sorry to hear it didn’t go as well as you’d hoped. I know the feeling you get leading up to Halloween, thinking about that night, finally, you’ll be able to suit up in your awesome costume you’ve spent so long trying to get all the right, accurate pieces to, then finally getting to wear it on Halloween night, just for something to come up at the last minute and ruin the whole experience… it really sucks.
For example, last year I was part 6 Jason for Halloween, and I was so pumped for it before hand, but on that night, things were going well enough until some family came over and I had to take the mask off, ruining the whole outfit basically. And then at the end of the night, when you take off the costume, thinking about how things went, you just feel…unsatisfied, disappointed, wanting more, another chance, but you have to sit with the reality that it’s over and now you have to wait for a whole year to get that “second chance”.

I feel that. Before Halloween this year, I did as much as I could to get use out of my cheap little costume. Paid off, honestly. Local events and celebrations, the H40 con, etc.

Your set-up was amazing! Wish people got into the spirit like that. Can’t wait to see what you do with Billy! I’m also already planning for next year and am thinking of doing a weekly Halloween series on my YouTube channel all year round. Thanks for sharing your video and your own experiences!

I’ve had that happen as well, especially when my girls were younger and afraid of my costumes. The last time Halloween fell on a Saturday, there was a huge storm and everyone stayed indoors. I suited up as The Shape when the rain let up a bit but my girls were not happy to see Myers in the house with them. For some reason, they weren’t scared when I went trick or treating with them but they didn’t like me putting on the mask just to stand at the door and give out candy. That was a bad year but once everyone went to bed I watched H1 and Trick R Treat and “paired” some good red wine with the Halloween candy we couldn’t give away. That feeling when you take the costume off for the last time that year is awful. It’s something only fans like us really understand.

I hate the fact there is Christmas music on the radio before Thanksgiving. Really pushes it for me, but I agree. Sad to have Halloween come and gone so quick. I hope you have a better one next year though.

My season wasn’t great after the first week of October, but I celebrate it until November 13th, so I get extra time.

As a cosplayer I’ll tell you that you have to try on clothing, masks and work props weeks before go time. Call it a dry run. If you’re prepping up for Halloween you should be doing all your coverall ordering weeks in advance so you can try them on, especially since work wear is all over the place in terms of fit. I’ve sent back tons of coveralls from ebay that didn’t do the job.

Masks are the same. I’ve waited months for masks that didn’t fit or didn’t suit me and I just sold them off and moved on to something else. TOTs has a pretty spotty track record for quality in a lot of ways, but it’s widely known that their masks run smaller. Generally what they offer in a picture isn’t what you’re going to get - though I’ll admit they did ok with the h40. But that’s the way budget masks go.

Costuming isn’t easy. Finding the prefect fit takes time, and putting work into making it all fit correctly is part of the game.

Sorry your halloween sucked, but you gotta look on the bright side of life and not let the small things bring you down.

Well maybe this will make you feel a little better…two years ago it was the defining moment of a bad Halloween for a Myers who once stalked his neighborhood for the better part of 20 years. Every year I am Myers, and for two plus decades, plenty of kids to scare and romp around having a good ol time. Until 2016, when on one rainy as shit Halloween night, reality set in that all the kids of my neighborhood had grown up, as not one, and I mean not one single soul came out to trick or treat. Completely dead.

I was literally the only one out roaming around in a Halloween costume, just raining, dark, no one’s lights were on, no one decorated for Halloween and just a complete ghost town. Talk about depressing after waiting all year for that night.

My poor son who was only 1 and a half at the time, had no real trick or treat experience, because not only was he the only kid in the neighborhood, none of my neighbors even decorated or even gave out candy!! Total shit show! A complete waste of a Halloween!

Now in the past two years I have gone to my in-laws for trick or treat as they have hundreds of kids out trick or treating, and my son gets to have a good ol time up there, and I get to have my fun again as Myers.

But dude, once again here in my neighborhood this year, I was the only one to decorate my house for Halloween! Not one lame ass fucker in this place even attempted to try!

I mean I get it, there’s no kids here anymore, but holy hell they don’t even have a pumpkin out in this town! Shit sucks major ass and is depressing shit to see. My mother in-law came one day to pick up my son before I had to leave for work, and she said does no one here decorate for Halloween anymore?! I said nope, they don’t even try, just a bunch of hermits who barely come out of their houses let alone decorate!

To make things more weird, these lame asses don’t even decorate for Xmas!! I and maybe one other house decorates for Xmas here, it’s really just a sad sight to see.

But I found a way around it by just going to a new neighborhood and continuing my Myers tradition up there. Mainly so my son gets to have a fun trick or treat, but also let’s me do my thing again on Halloween night. I also took up doing a trick or treat trail the last two years as well so I get to double dip a little bit lol.

So yeah, I know all about them shitty seasons, that’s every season and every holiday in my shit ass neighborhood!! Lol so don’t feel too bad man!

I have to say the past few Halloweens for me have not been the same for me. the past 4 years some of my buddies and I get together and go down to Martinsville VA for the NASCAR race which is the last Sunday in October so Halloween has fallen on or the day after we get back so i have not really done anything. I was looking forward to it this year as it fell a few days after we got back but the camper was a mud mess and look longer to clean so I really didn’t do much on Halloween this year except smoke a cigar. Next year for sure I am not going to miss it

Thanks so much for the feedback! Yes, I’m already trying to get that tricycle working… learning a lot about RC, motors, servos etc. The video was so short since my friend took it on his phone, I was too tired to even put my Myers costume on and walk around the yard like I usually do.

What’s your youtube account? I’d like to start posting more videos too, but I don’t want to give away too many “Trade secrets” lol
