Which company made the most screen accurate Michael myers mask first? Was it nag? Trick or treat studios? Night owl productions? I know trick or treat studios made decent ones but I’m talking about the ones that look exactly like it did in the Actual movie, when did those start coming out?
Theres no solid answer to this. For every person who thinks a Creep is perfect, there will be 2 who say the 98 Proto is, then there will be 3 who say the 2K is. And to some it doesnt exist yet.
Horrorcostumeindex.com has a lineage chart you can look at though and see what masks do come from the lineage of the Kirk.
I’m no expert on the subject but I’m going w/ NAG. He just blew all of the competition away at the time. Once he started releasing masks it was clear to me that the look had been perfected. Everything else afterwards would simply be beating a dead horse.
IIRC, the first fan made masks came out from Sam McCain with Horror Sanctum Studios back in the 1980s. Members who’ve been around longer than me would know more about what he was making back then and the accuracy of them, but I know that Nik’s H78 changed the game by being the first mask available that was a Kirk to Myers blank. It was a photo of an H78 done up by James Carter that got me into collecting.
Well, there’s only one obvious answer: the original DPS 75 Kirk. Haha I’m just joking , somewhat serious though. This is my opinion, but I believe that currently no mask company/independent artist holds the title for making the first screen accurate Myers mask other than the original 75 Kirks. There are lots of masks out there that come very close in terms of sculpt, paint, hair, etc. but none have screamed “screen accurate” to me. There’s just something about those original Kirk masks that never miss when it comes to the screen accuracy; that something being that was the mask used in the movie. Though, I give props and respect those independent mask artists out there who have been able to sculpt awesome pieces of art with their hands and reference pictures; bravo! Off the top of my head, the two mask artists that definitely have caught my eyes are the ID mask by James (worn look) and any NAG mask that has lineage to the 98 prototype Kirk mask (DPS prototype that was made in 98’ using the 75 Kirk master, I believe?) This question is a hard one to answer and you’ll probably get a variety of answers. Everyone in this community envisions the mask differently, we all have different definitions in our mind for ‘screen accurate’. Any mask that has some sort of 75 Kirk lineage is accurate and good enough to pull of movie shots (taking into account lighting, head shape, thickness, paint job, etc.). Hope this helps somehow.
Sam Mccain’s shape mask is a great mask as well when it comes to accuracy, one of the first, if I’m not mistaken. He did some of the earliest independent Myers masks out there and provided a lot to the community. May he rest in peace. But I won’t go too into depth on the mask as I don’t have much knowledge on how the mask was made, but when answering this question, I took into consideration naming masks that had some sort of lineage to the 75 Kirk masks, which is a lot of masks in this hobby so I only named two of the most popular masks/makers in recent years. For me though, the answer is still the same. Nothing will beat the original 75 Kirk masks (unless someone would of scanned a 75 Kirk to make the perfect replica).
At first I was going to disagree, but in the end, I think you made your point well. Of all the replica Kirks that have been made, none of them have been perfect replicas. From the quality, and type of latex DPS used, to the old fashioned glue and paint tricks they applied, to the hair sourcing… a lot of it has been lost to time and in a way those original DPS Kirk masks were lightning in a bottle as much as the original Myers masks that came from them were.
