How did YOU get started??

My dad went to see Halloween 1 in theatres when it first came out. He loved it and bought a poster we had in our living room for years before we moved. I watched it for the first time at 6 and fell in love with the whole concept of the films. This dark force of nature that does its work in a little quite town that any one of us could live in. I started looking up stuff about the movies and that lead me here :myers: I saw all these beautiful masks and needed one for my self. 13 masks later I still love it!! WHATS YOUR STORY?

Saw H2 first in 1985 on a bus going from Scotland to England. After Ii got home I had to found out more about this guy Michael Myers lol.

First saw it last year…

My dad saw Halloween on TV when he was around 10 (so around 1980-81) while babysitting my uncle.
It scared the hell out of him and grew to be his favorite horror film from then on.
When I started developing an interest in horror, he insisted that I watch Halloween. He had bought the 20th anniversary VHS (with the t-shirt) and that’s how I first saw the film. It hit me instantly and I became a life-long fan on the spot. Halloween has since become something my dad and I bond over. I have tons of fond memories of carving pumpkins, baking seeds, and watching AMC’s horror marathons with my family when I was younger. We used to also mutually make fun of the awful “Myers” masks at drugstores and Kmart and wish for a perfect replica some day.
When I eventually saw all the insanely cool Myers masks on eBay (when sorting “Price: highest to lowest”, lol), I wondered where the hell they were all coming from and where the market had its roots. I discovered this place a few years later and lurked for a long while until I became a member and snagged an AHG “Nightmare” a couple years back.
I now tremble with anticipation this time of year.
I can’t wait to start decorating the house and partaking in all of Fall’s perfection.

Whew! Long post.

I was 17 back in the Summer of 2010, and I managed to catch Rob Zombie’s Halloween on TV. For some odd reason, though, it was the director’s cut. I remember being fascinated by the movie. The idea of an ordinary little boy who turned into a vicious monster? And from my own home state, no less? I couldn’t believe it! I soon found and watched RZH2 on TV after that. I then proceeded to watch all the other movies on YouTube (back when you could find full movies on YouTube). By that time, October rolled around. “Halloween: The Inside Story” aired on the Biography Channel that year, and that’s where I got my first behind the scenes information on Halloween and the Myers mask. I also bought a cheap, $10 Michael Myers mask from K-Mart, and cut it up like an RZH2 exposed mask. That Halloween, I made my first attempt ever at a Myers costume:

That month, I also joined here. My God, I was such a noob. After a few months, I actually quit coming back due to my own embarrassment with my immaturity. But, in those few months, I learned about the various masks available to me. Masks like the Maniac, the H78, and the Psycho, all of which I knew I wanted and all of which I now proudly own. I finally got back into the hobby in 2013, when I noticed that TOTS had been producing a wonderful H2 mask. When I first saw it, I thought it must have been a trick. No mask maker had ever before made such wonderful looking masks. I bought it without hesitation, along with a pair of spruce green Red Kap coveralls, and quickly dusted off my old account to proudly display my new scores. I’ve been a happy regular ever since. :pumpkin:

For whatever reason, I missed out on the Halloween series when I was young. I grew up watching Friday the 13th and wore cheap, glow-in-the-dark hockey masks a few years in a row as a kid. I was aware of the Halloween series but figured it couldn’t be as cool as Friday the 13th. I also thought that the Myers mask hair was the actor’s real hair (and that the mask was a face mask). By the time I started to grow up a bit, the movies in the series coming out were not very good. But I saw ads for H6 and H2O, sort of wondering what I was missing. What I didn’t realize was that the first film really is a classic. As I learned more about its reputation, I kept meaning to watch it and finally did so. When I first watched it, I thought maybe we wouldn’t ever get to see Michael, and that we’d only get to see through his eyes. I didn’t expect to be as affected by it as I was. So I watched it several more times, and eventually thought it might be cool to buy a mask. So I bought a TOTS H2 and that was the start.

I remember when I was around 6-9 years old my dad would put H1 or H2 on the TV around that time of year and I would be absolutely terrified. Like I couldn’t even be in the same room as the TV because I would get so scared. I think the music is what scared me the most, because I really don’t remember being particularly afraid of any of the scenes (because I would run out before I saw much of them). One thing my dad did to scare me is turn the TV up real loud so I could still here the music after I ran away. The only scenes I remember watching and being afraid of were Loomis and Marion driving through the rain (because for some reason I remember something splattering on the windshield, even though that never happens), Annie being strangled in the car (that REALLY scared the shit out of me), and the scene were Michael goes up the stairs (“You can’t kill the boogeyman”) and chases Laurie to the closet. I particularly remember that one because of the “The Shape Stalks” music (that really fucking scared me). I never forgot about that music. It’s weird because I remember it going “DUN DUN… DUN… DUN DUN… DUN” rather than “DUN… DUN DUN… DUN… DUN DUN…”. Oh I forgot about this: I remember reluctantly watching the scene in Halloween II with my dad where Michael walks through the glass door and gets shot by Loomis (I don’t remember if my dad happened to put it on after Michael was shot and on the floor, or if I actually watched him get shot). Anyway, Michael was on the floor and I was scared shitless trying to run away but my dad was saying things like “Look, he’s dead! Everything’s OK!”. So I came back into the room and started watching again, feeling a little better because I really thought he was dead. Then I saw the marshall bend over Michael and get his throat slit. That fucking horrified me. Thanks dad. I vageuly remember Michael burning up to Mr. Sandman (although I assumed it was just a bonfire or something because I didn’t see it with any context). Back then I didn’t know that they were two different movies because I hadn’t watched any of the two for more than a minute tops. It wasn’t until a year ago that I actually watched Halloween and Halloween II in their entireties (not because I was scared, I was sixteen by then, but just because I had simply not got around to watching them), and they both became some of my favorite movies. I started reading about them online like I do with all of my favorite movies, and that’s how I got here! It was really nostalgic to look back on those times when I was young and scared shitless of these movies.

Interestingly enough, I saw bits and pieces of Halloween II when I was a child at the local day care center. How responsible of them right :unamused: I was too young to remember much, however the hot tube scene always stuck with me for some reason. I grew up in South Pasadena so of course my dad asks me (this time I was in middle school  ), “Do you want to see the most famous movie filmed in our city.” Of course I was interested so I gave it a shot and it was instant love. I already had a love affair with the holiday since childhood so naturally I became obsessed with the film, sequels, soundtracks, other horror franchises & films, this sanctuary of a chat forum and then the expensive mask collecting habit hahaa. While I sold all my expensive masks during college I still stayed true to my pagan roots and did the whole haunted house thing every year. I even took up piano just to learn the main theme and Laurie’s theme. Even though I’m pretty much done with mask collecting I still respect the hobby along with the collectors and artists who keep it going. So what do I do, come back here every once in a while to check how the scene is doing. So far it looks like it’s growing. So cheers to you guys, new an old, and (almost) happy autumn! :drinkers:

Great stories guy!

Man, I love threads like this.
Thanks for sharing, everyone!

It’s cool that we all got started completely different ways. But we all ended up here!

When Halloween 2007 came out, my family rented it and i watched it and loved the concept of a big man slashing teens.
When i was 7, i have seem all the F13th and Nightmare films and wanted something new. I watched Halloween 4,5,6,7.
Around Halloween, i saw the perfect 1978 film, the sequel, 8, and both remakes. in 2011, i got my first Myers mask, a
Don post 2003 “the mask”. Christmas 2011, i got a Movie Maniacs Michael Myers action figure.

I have always loved slasher films and Halloween is my 2 favorite! (behind F13th). :myers:

saw Halloween in 1990 and there you go

I grew up watching the Halloween films on the AMC fear fest each year, and I remember being so frightened at a young age watching them because at the time, I couldn’t even stand to look at any myers mask ha ha. Regardless, I eventually developed a true interest in the films, the first film from 1978 in particular, and it just so happened we had a vhs of H1 and H2 laying around back then so I popped them in and I was pretty much hooked from then on.

I was born in '86, when I was 4-5 my mom would take
me to blockbuster video and I would always be drawn to the horror section. VHS cover boxes drew my attention, I remember in '91 at the local blockbuster seeing the cover for 1978’s H1, I scooped up the rental behind the box, I begged and pleaded with my mom to rent it. She obliged and since then I’ve been hooked. My dad is no horror buff but loves H1, H2, and H3. Every year my friends all know I’m the horror fanatic and they will call with recommendations. Found this site on chance in September this year, bought my first real indie mask last September. Met an awesome dude in Uwannadon, took me under his wing when I joined and has guided me ever since. Talking almost daily about anything and everything. Not to be long winded but I recently a funeral for my best friends dad and this place really helped me cope. It is great to have this community and culture full of people to learn from and talk with. I’m the proud owner of a 2012 RL/QOTS Destroyer and a NAG AHG/JC 75K. Have movie accurate coveralls done by two great artists from this community along with Daves one of a kind amazing knives. Bought and weathered boots to complete both costumes. I love this place and look forward to getting to know many more people here for a long time to come. Once I’m over being sick I will post some great worns, I will be working a haunt this Friday and Saturday as well!

I saw the first the halloween film when i was 5 back in the year 2000, first horror film i have ever seen and loved the hell out of it and have been watching it my whole life loving it until this day, since i first saw it i always wanted a mask like michael myers, when i was 13 i bought some new don post myers mask, and eventually got it sighed by tony moran at a halloween convention witch is cool and better than nothing, but the mask still looks pretty shitty, so just a month ago i decided im done waiting, since halloween is approaching, i should get a really nice replica h1 mask, so i did some research online, came across this awesome site, with an awesome comunity, and bought my first REAL, GOOD QUALITY myers mask.

Great stories, guys!!
Here’s mine…

After watching the Evil Dead 1986 at the age of 8 I completely quit watching scary stuff until I was 13… This experience has been too intense, I guess…
Hell, I even was afraid of Critters after that, hahaha!!!

Years later, at the age of 13, I found some pics of Michael in a magacine. And all my friends knew him. So I got interested…

A few weeks later “Halloween” was on TV & I decided to watch it…
This night completely changed my life!!!
First thought was: The best movie ever made!!!
Second thought: I NEED that mask!!!

Years later:
In 2002, after the release of H:R
I started surfing in the web, found ebay, google and finally this site…

All my dreams came true!!!

Got my first Myers mask (CS Resurrection) and finally my 1st Indie mask that absolutely matched the look of the hero in H1, the best & most accurate mask in the world:
CGP NEMESIS…

30 Myers masks later the flame is still burning and I don’t think that the madness will ever end, hahaha!!

My father used to record rented VHS tapes for years, some of his tapes are the same age as I am. Anyway he had a collection of movies several thousand large. He worked as a Millwright when I was growing up. Used to be gone building industrial plants and factories months at time sometimes. He was an ex chief of police so his taste in movies was usually horror, action, westerns, and war. My mother worked too so I was mostly raised by my grandparents and my older half brother. So I didn’t really have a lot of supervision. He had a tapethat had three films on it Star Trek: The Motion Picture (Lol ironic) Halloween 2 and Time Rider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann. So Halloween 2 (1981) was my initial introduction to Myers. He Had Halloween 1 but it sat on a higher shelf in his movie case and i didn’t see it till I was 4 (I was 3 when I saw H2) after I started grabbing a chair to stand on to get the movies higher up from where I could reach. I started reading Fangoria magazine when I was 8. I found adds in the back advertising Don Post masks and saw an add for the 1985 DP The Mask. I had my dad order one for me, for my birthday that year. It was destroyed by my friend William who ripped the chin off while removing it from his head (thus creating my ocd trait for never liking masks with the lips cut open. I first came upon jack in the box masks and ordered a Killing Machine. Did it up H2 Blood tears style. Next I found this forum and came across my first true H2 loved mask the CGP Nemesis mask. Not too much time passed and found the CGP warlock. My one true love of the Myers masks…
