how do i use charcol on my mask?

i have charcol pencils tht are black and grey. I know this is wht ALOT of you guys use to weather ur asks. Where do i apply the charcol on my mask? any where specific?

lightly apply the charcoal to the lips, underside of nose, inside corners of the eyes, and lightly trace the natural sculpted cheek lines.
if you want a “dirty” looking mask apply charcoal even lighter in other areas such as forehead, temples, and down the side of the face and neck.
i use a Q tip for applying charcoal but i keep a damp wash cloth handy incase you get alittle too dark. a dry a wash cloth spreads the charcoal nice and evenly for an overall dirty weathering job.
just start out applying lightly and play with it, you’ll get a feel for it.

Can u or someone u know do a video demo? i cant afford to fuck this up/.

hey, go on youtube and look at costumebot’s video, he uses paint but it still helps with knowing where to apply it, also if i was you i would have a sheet of paper. then just use the paper to apply the charcoal, apply the charcoal in a big blob to the paper, then rub your fingers on it and apply to the mask to get a smudged shaded affect, so you don’t put too much charcoal on or press down too much with the charcoal stick. Hope i helped

Embodied knows what hes saying!!!
The method that one mask maker told me is to put charcoal sticks into a bag, use something hard like a hammer, and crush it!! Then use those dust things, then apply it to the places you want!
Good Luck man!
Don

That’s exactly what I do! It works great!

Arent charcoal pencils oil based? If so, I wouldnt use it at all as oil with break down the latex over time.

were can i buy the charcol at??? hobby stores or what??

Not sure but if you are having trouble getting charcoal, pencil is just as good, check out my avatar pic, that was done with pencil!

If you can’t afford to mess your mask up, then your best bet is to not even attempt to alter it if you don’t have any experience with applying charcoal to masks. Just my opinion though…

yea but wouldnt it rub off ???

I wouldn’t use charcoal. If you use thinned down acrylic it is much more natural looking and you have more control of applying it.

Once charcoal is rubbed in very good its next to impossible to come off completely, even with rubbing alcohol.

Stick to a normal #2 pencil. Charcol will become semi-permanent after time passes.
