How snug should the mask fit?

Hi. An odd question, one that, perhaps, is a little loaded, as this has been a point of contention for a few films in the Halloween franchise, but in pictures that I’ve taken via phone with both my new Night Owl Creep and ToTs H40, I’ve found that, in order to get the “Blackest Eyes, Devil’s Eyes” look that Doctor Loomis puts into our minds when we think of Michael, that the lighting needs to be just perfect, and even then… it can be very difficult to pull off.

So, now begs the question. How snug do you want your Myers mask to fit in order to be able to give that look without needing to put on some sort of black headcover under the mask? For example, I have a head size of around 22-23 inches. Both my Creep and H40 fit snug on my head. Eyes aren’t pressed right against the eyeholes, but they’re fairly close to them, and opening my mouth distends the chin of the masks, with the Creep having the most egregious pull against me. It makes for a good ability to get a Warlock or Castle stretch, but it also makes it difficult to pull off said look, at least for me.

This is the one problem I have with collecting masks and such. I have an extremely big head, and on top of that I have an extreme amount of hair which means this all combines together to make pretty much any mask I wear tight. Unfortunately that means that in order to pull off that “blackest eyes” look I always have to wear a morph suit mask. It is a bit of an inconvenience, but I think a big part of the Shape is having his eyes concealed, so really in the end whether the mask is loose, tight, or anything in between, I think there’s always a way you can conceal your eyes, and that to me at least is the most important part.

Obviously, head size and mask size have a lot to do with it. Say…a Creep will look vastly different on someone with a smaller head vs someone with a bigger head. One thing is for sure, you don’t want a mask that’s too big, because that usually looks worse than one that’s snug. Of course one that’s too tight can also look very odd but Id take a snugger mask than a big loose mask.

Two things to consider. Try pulling the mask so that your eyes aren’t centered, you want the eye holes below your eyes IF THE MASK ALLOWS IT
it may involve wearing the mask in a way that feels odd, but it will conceal them better.
The other thing is a lot simpler. A Myers mask was never designed to be seen in a well, straight on lit area. Walking a dark street on Halloween, being in a home with minimal light, Overhead lighting etc…these are all scenarios that will make the mask look so much better no matter how snug is it.

This is pretty much the best shot showing Nicks eyes in the Hero mask, his afro back then actually added to the stretch along with having a narrower face/head

Even when he wears his 2018 mask, his eyes are still in the same position, though in most photos he has taken recently, the mask sits up higher, since he just puts it on then pulls it off afterwards, he doesn’t adjust it or anything much since he isn’t on set

My first ever Myers mask was a crappy early 2000 don post mask. I’ve owned quite a lot of indie Myers masks in my life, yet my all time favourite to wear is that crappy Don Post (which I still own). That mask is SMALL. Yes it is tight on my face, but the head to body ratio size is absolutely accurate to the film.

The biggest thing I always notice with peoples Myers masks is they look way too big for their body. It really ruins the look for me, just reminds me of when you see kids try on Myers masks and they have a small little body with a big massive head. My 75k is 24” and fits me VERY comfortably. It’s not too tight, not too loose. It’s the most comfortable mask to wear. But I still think the masks looks a tiny tiny tiny bit too big on my head when I wear it. Well, not that it looks big, but if you look at Nick Castle wearing the mask or TLW, the mask doesn’t look big or slightly big for their body. Everything is in proportion because the 1975 Kirk was an actual child’s mask. So still till this day, my Don Post mask gives off the most accurate look in terms of size when it’s being worn.

I just ordered another indie mask, this time as 23.5”. I’m hoping this will match the size of my Don post mask. My head is wider, so gives the small masks more of a warlock stretch than a castle stretch, which I wish wasn’t the case as I prefer the H1 look. For many people, for this reason alone they might get a bigger sized mask isn’t affected by their head shape. But seriously, your mask will stay on display for most of its life, so I would rather get a more accurate sized mask that will look amazing on display rather than worry about what it looks like when I’m wearing it all the time, unless I was wearing it every day or something…

Your post just reminded me of Nick also wearing an older Mass produced mask, here’s a shot of him in it, funny how his head shapes the mask

These pics are basically a godsend for thinking of the general snug fitness of the mask. I almost thought my Creep was a little too small on my head. Good in pictures though, and in the right lighting, it’s basically indistinguishable from the Hero.

I was already aware of the way the mask is supposed to catch the light. I already tried to do that in some of the pics I made on my Score thread, with the one where I’m standing across the street being the most successful imho, followed by the Red Light pics.

Was more curious on how snug you want your mask anyways, which you also provided. So thanks! Means a lot that y’all are being so helpful with what may seem like obvious answer questions.

In my experience it should be a little snug on the face, enough so you don’t warp the mask but it can still cast a light shadow over your eyes in light so when you’re in lower light your eyes are harder to make out, only example is this tots kills that I rehauled

So, how would you say that the Creep looks in a pic like this would be fine?

From that angle I honestly can’t really tell

Apologies. Didn’t really have a better picture. I have a comparison in low level light vs a light on now.

There’s also this pic that I have from my Score thread on my Creep.

Dude youre golden. That mask looks amazing on you

It looks like it fits great! Love the last shot

Agree with the others, looks great on you. Especially the one picture with the low lighting. That right there is the shape.

See, now I have the opposite problem. My head tends towards the smaller size, and I fit nicely in small/medium sized hats. Almost every indie made mask is sized 24" and I tends towards a 22 or 23. It’s a pain finding a mask that fits just right unless it’s special ordered.

I feel the same way. I think the mask should be skin tight against the face. Everything I’ve found about the original mask was that it was snug against Nick’s face. This is why my TOTS H40 and Kills masks are my two favorite to wear. They fit me the best. I have a short neck, too, so the proportions are just right.

I have always thought how the mask size looks on your individual body is paramount…

Is the mask close to the head/body proportions of the movie character? Does it looks too big compared to the rest of your body? In Halloween, the mask never seemed too big or oversized like a traditional mask… To me, this meant the mask was either on the small side ( it almost resembled an actual head size appearance ), and / or due to Castle’s fro hair, which would have most likely been pushed towards the back of the mask, thereby pushing the mask more onto the face - giving a more tighter form fitted facial appearance… Many movie shots were also from a low angle, which by slight forced perspective, would have made the mask appear slightly smaller too…

If you are really going to go all out, you could compare silhouettes of yourself in full costume vs movie silhouettes to see how close the match is…

For some pieces I have that are on the larger side, I may stuff the back of the mask with a small bag so it pushes the mask more onto my face, giving a smaller overall appearance. Then I will pad the sides of my shoulders to give myself a wider frame… Things that will change the mask/body ratio…

Food 4 thot…
