I just had a 1986 Don Post mask arrive today, and while the latex looks and feels like new to me, my wife is telling me that it has a bad mildew smell to it. She suggested I put it inside a plastic bag inside the Freezer for 24HRS AND that the COLD will kill the mildew and get rid of the smell. I was wondering if anyone here ever done this?
I just want to know if it this is safe to do with a vintage latex mask or not?
I would definitely not try that. I know latex is ruined if it is frozen when in its liquid form… not sure about in its solid form. But I’m sure it would not do it any good. I would wipe the inside of the mask down with an alcohol wipe. The alcohol should evaporate before it could do any harm to the mask.
Simply airing the mask out “outside” for a while should do the trick. I’ve had masks in the past that have had bad odors in them as well. It might take a week or two for the smell to disappear but who cares. It works. You could even try sticking a box of baking soda under the mask on a mask stand and covering it with a plastic bag. I’ve done that too and it works as well. Hope this helps.
Thanks, Mark. I didn’t think sticking it in the freezer sounded like a good idea either–a wipe down with an alcohol wipe sounds like a much better plan.
Slasher75, I’ve got it under a plastic bag with baking soda now, and I’ll air it out outdoors as soon as we get a stretch of nice days with some sunlight here in WA state.
The Shape Of Fear, using dryer sheets make sense too, I’ll try that next if needed.
