I researched this a lot. Stripping the mask of it’s paint and black washing over a sealed base layer seems to be the way to go if you really want these details to pop.
I personally cannot get how black washing works.I tried
the acrylic ink + 70% alcohol mix and the plasti dip sealer
cracked ( so I had to strip all the paint again) …
What is the actual right way to do this?
There’s a variety of ways to do it. Sounds like the alcohol affected the plastidip.
Personally, I would use a ratio of 50/50 acrylic paint to distilled water, and add a very small touch of dawn soap. Paint the wash on, then take a damp rag and remove the wash. Should give the mask the tint that you’re looking for.
If you have an airbrush, you can do the same ratio, mentioned above, but spray side to side, up and down, with around 12 inches of distance between the mask. Don’t go too heavy. I prefer this method, as you have more control.
You could do what you did, in the post (acrylic ink washout), but don’t have plastic dip on the mask, at all. I think the alcohol interacted negatively. In fact, alcohol will badly affect most sealants, so if you opt to want to use the alcohol ink washout, save plasti dip for the final seal.
