How was the original Kirk actually made by Don Post?

Did they actually make a cast of William Shatner’s Face? Sorry if it’s a dumb question. I just never read it anywhere.

Yeah I heard it was on a 2 by 4 lol

And yes it was a William shatner face cast u can buy the exact one they used off eBay I’m sure someone on here could point u in the right direction if u wanted one lol it was for a movie called devils rain or something here’s a photo of the actual life cast I’m sure u can see the resemblance

Very interesting!! Did they say why they made the cast for the film?

Don Post Studios made the life cast for the purpose of making facial applications for the Devil’s Rain movie. Certain scenes required the latex appliances. They did it for both Shatner and Travolta. That is why the life cast was originally made. Since they had the life cast from that film shoot, they would then go on to use that to make their Star Trek Kirk mask.

Very cool!! Thanks!!

Don post junior got hold of one of the face molds made of Bill shatner on the movie the devils Rain.
He wore an appliance where it looks his eyes are torn out empty sockets.

Don post jr got it, then made a clay copy of it and sculpted the rest, the neck, ears, back of the head etc

Don post studios where one of the few if not only mask companies to use actors face cast/lineage to the charactor

Back in the day the bought boris karloff/lon chaney molds back in the day, And they would use the actors mold to
sculpt the monster features onto

Pretty coincidental but eerie

Very cool!! Thank you!!!

DPS did not do the FX for devils rain.

As far as the lifecast being from devils rain- I’m not sure I buy that. The lifecast we know was used looks much more young than how we see Shatner in his Devil’s Rain appearance.

Just going off of things I’ve read on this forum in years past. Add it to the list of things that never have a definitive answer around here. :unamused: Just like with anything on here, just when you think you have the answers, they change the questions

Acorad, bro, you should know a question like that leads to several paths of multiple choice  In fact just about anything involving the original mask leads to multiple choice, so choose what you like to believe best

Haha, I had never read anything before that had communicated where the original Kirk came from aside of course being made by Don Post Studios. The details in that mask were amazing!

I’m not sure. Star Trek the Motion Picture came out 4 years after Devil’s Rain, and he still looked fairly young in that.

But that is a 4 year difference, between Star Trek (original series where the lifecast was taken) and The Devils Rain was closer to 10 years difference. Looking at Shatner in ST in the 60s vs the lifecast vs the devils rain the difference is pretty apparent IMO.

The features are pretty noticeable, it’s really cool! This whole thread stemmed from me watching an old Twilight Zone episode with William Shatner. Even that classic “V” in the forehead was very noticeable when I was watching the episode. The hair was unmistakable as well. Pretty damn cool!

I think the lifecast was taken was he younger I heard during devils rain which was in 1975 or something but whatever all I know is that the life cast I posted was indeed used for the 1975 kirk we all know and love
