Seriously, barely anyone talks about this cause it’s being overshadowed (rightfully so) by the official release of Rob Zombie masks but I think it deserved its own thread to talk a bit about it (if you find quality pics from the halloween expo please post them)
It’s a bit weird cause I can find barely any information about it and in some streams it’s not even present in the expo lineup, but still, I really, really like this mold (supposedly a Nightowl Death), especially after knowing that the Creep/Kirk was put out of production!
One aspect I really like is how prominent the cheeks seem at an angle, where masks like the boogeyman are very bloated and round in comparison.
Plus there’s that hint of a stretch there on the chin (with the cut mouth hole as well) that would make this really work as a H1.
I’m planning to try and work on something like this once it will be in my hands
This is on my radar more than the RZ ones. I plan on doing the same thing. I have converted Kirks, Boogeyman, etc, but I feel there’s something off about the sculpts, perhaps it’s the lack of definition in the cheeks or the mouth droop; this new mask has those features for me.
I personally think it looks more H1 than any other mask TOTS have done, aside from maybe the H4 poster mask, which always reminds me of the phone scene with the lighting that made the lips look sharper in H1.
But I think this The Mask, looks more like an OG Kirk than their actual Kirk. I just hope the neck cut pays off, as it seems to extent as it goes down, bit of velcro maybe might fix that.
If you don’t have a long face, I always found stuffing a sock or two in the chin works wonders for a Castle stretch, or padding if you want to get fancy.
I would think it’s due to pending license approval like the picture says maybe. It’s probably something like that, otherwise why exclude it right?
Looks definitely closer to an H1 than their actual 78 style masks.
I’m glad to see a thread on this mask. It and the Four Horsemen from Lord Grimley’s were my favorite reveals from the expo. If the production mask is as good as these pics and it’s not a kid’s sized mask, it will replace my 78.
Is Don Post Studios attached legitimately or just a novelty namesake for marketing? I know they’re paying for the “The Mask” name, but DPS is also seen in the watermark so I was just curious.
Also, what’s the MO here? Surely this is marketed to Myers super fans who would know “The Mask” at all, right? No casual fan in the 90’s would know the difference in any mass produced Myers mask let alone the history of “The Mask.” It just seems like a loss leader here when I think most casuals would pick up a 78 off the shelf.
Finally, this doesn’t look anything like “The Mask” to me. I know it’s a Nightowl mold, which begs the question, why use “The Mask” name if it’s not the original mold? And the eye cuts are 78 authentic, whereas “The Mask” cuts were wildly all over the place but essentially oval.
I guess what I’m getting at is what is the point of this? I’m all for more Myers masks on the shelves but from a business standpoint I don’t see the end game here. Especially when you already have a ‘78 mask on the shelves, and instead of utilizing the actual Mask mold (which in it’s finished state was very different than the ‘78), they’re using a Nightowl mold that is clearly also faithful to ‘78.
You’re perfectly right about everything, my theory? They wanted to put out a replacement mask for people that wanna do Myers conversions since they discontinued the Kirk.I wouldn’t be surprised if this is another online only mask like the Boogeyman
Hi, casual and new fan here to the Myers mask community. Uh, is there a thread on here where I could learn about what “the mask” is? I’m curious now and wanna learn
Oh man, there’s gotta be literally a hundred threads on The Mask over the years here. I’m short for time and limited on expertise anyhow but The Mask was put out in the mid 80’s (?) by Don Post after they lost litigation claiming they owned the rights to the Myers image based on the original Kirk. So they put out something similar enough yet different and named it “The Mask” (they couldn’t say Michael Myers).
It was released again during the 90’s and in the early 2000’s. Really around that time it was the only mass produced Myers mask available in stores other than Illusive Concepts’ infamous “blue lips Myers” and then Cinema Secrets’ Resurrection mask. I guess Paper Magic Group also had several different masks they released in the mid-late 2000’s also. So if you were into the Halloween films or masks around that time I’m sure you have seen one on shelves.
Just Google “The Mask” + Don Post Studios and you’ll find everything you ever need on the subject.
Hopefully somebody with more knowledge than myself will chime in.
