Is this Shat a recast?

Hey all,

I just saw this Shat on eBay. It says it is the Nightowl Shat #10, converted by Colin Mayne. I sold Colin the #10 Shat last year, so it could very well be legitimate, but at very least, Justin’s signature has been altered. The auction listing also states the mask is cast in “black tint” latex, but my Shat was cast in the regular natural latex colour.

Here is my picture of the mask, and the sellers.

And here is my picture of the signature. You can see the bubbles in the latex appear to match up, but the signature has definitely been altered. And the latex does look to have a tint of black to it. Weird.

I’ve just been looking at this literally 10 minutes ago thinking…that’s some cheap Shat
not sure if it’s recast but the pull looks far from great on the inside with all the air bubbles.

Unless it was sold as a flawed blank then that would be why it’s going cheap.
Sometimes sigs wear off with sweat residue etc so owners have been known to re-trace them over :bulb:

I don’t think it’s a recast. Some kind of forgery is going on for sure, but if it’s a recast it sure is a good one.
As for the bubbles, the Shat I owned had similar bubbles and indentations. It looked like the surface of the moon.

Not a recast as I think it’d be impossible to copy the interior of the original mask’s air bubbles. Looks like the original signature was partially removed and/or painted over so someone obviously tried to make it look like it was there by tracing over it.

The sigs wear off on mine after so many costume shots. So I don’t have mine signed anymore.lol

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. Looks like a legit Shat then. Not sure why the latex has a black tint to it…maybe Colin airbrushed inside the mask? Not sure why anyone would do that though.

I think you’ve become too used to Nik’s silky smooth latex, Anthony! Both of my Shats had many air bubbles on the inside like this. My 75k Supreme was near flawless! Nik just has better than average pulls. :sunglasses:

I tried buying a CGP Fear converted by JC from this seller this morning off eBay in a “buy now.” The seller wrote me pretty quickly that the transaction had to cancelled due to problems he was having with PayPal. I let him know I was confused because my account had been charged. He forwarded me the letter he got from PayPal telling him he could not receive payment via credit card (which mine wasn’t). We agreed on a refund, but then late afternoon he wrote me that he had gotten things straight with PayPal and the mask would ship tomorrow. Lastly, tonight I was notified by PayPal that I had received a full refund for that purchase. Seller wrote me he was sorry and that all still WASN’T OK with his account.
I knew I was taking a real chance since this seller only had 1 feedback. I did receive my refund after all the confusion and seller’s communication was very good so no hard feelings, but seller still has masks for sale (not the one I tried to buy), so whole thing weird. Sorry, can’t help with you in regard to the signature and story behind the Mabry mask, but buyers should be aware that seller at the very least may be having problems with a new account. Hope this helps a little

I picked up a flawed Shat blank from Justin yesterday. It looks great. A few air bubbles are no big deal.

Air bubbles will tend to happen when molds have had their run. None of my NOs are like that.

My Psychos and my Creep are all bubble free also.

That’s actually very true…i’ve been spoiled by the NAG quality
i will say though, all my past Nightowl stuff…Psycho’s, NMM78, Maniac, were all decent enough inside.

I’m not saying that it’s a recast, if it is, it sure is a good one. But, the signature does appear to be altered, someone might have traced it after it was worn off like some have speculated earlier in this thread.

But, don’t bother buying stuff from Colin Mayne as he’s known to sell recasts. I spoke to Ken Hertlein and he swears that he made only 8 KH SLE copies but yet there are 13 that exists. I have confirmed that THREE copies came from Colin. One of the owners of these three copies who’s a very good friend of mine believes that it’s a recast for sure given the Illinois State Seal is very hard to see on his copy. There are probably two more with similiar origins which would explain the additional 5 to the original 8 copies. Good thing Kaizu caught him red-handed in that trade that went bad.

Holy balls. I had no idea he or anyone had recasted the KH SLE. I nearly bought one, glad I passed. I knew he had done something fishy with a 2K Kirk that he said was destroyed then sold it for thousands and he and Andrew had recasted the KH RARE.

I bought this CREEP. It was a great deal. I’m not too worried it’s a recast though as the interior air bubbles were the same on both pulls. I also think the sellers pictures were pretty craptastic. Should there be any problems it was all a PayPal transaction so I am not worried in the slightest. I’ll share some pictures when it comes.

When a mold is very dry you get airbubbles on the inside of the casting. It draws the latex in to fast making bubbles. Most artist fill there mold with water or at the very least mist it with water dump it out then pour the latex. This makes for great pulls.

Yeah can’t really go wrong Josh for a few bucks like that on one of those, i believe it’s legit anyway, although Colin’s finish looks blah nothing stopping you sending away to JC or AHG or someone for a make over since it only stands you peanuts.

Forget AHG, just remembered he won’t do redo’s.lol

I got the CREEP today and was impressed. It’s legit and not a recast. Justin’s CREEP is very good at capturing many looks from both films. Sweet mask.
