Every year, the tradition for me to watch this movie becomes stronger than watching the original HalloweeN movies, specifically the first 4 of them. Not only do i think TrT at least equals the atmosphere and horror of those movies, in many ways I would argue it surpasses some of them. When I used to think of Halloween,I thought of Michael Myers. Now, I just as much think of Sam and this movie.
I know there are so,so many out there who love this film as well. My question is simple - do you consider Trick r Treat the best Halloween-themed film since the heyday of Michael Myers?
Can you believe I have yet to see this movie? I know, it’s probably criminal that I haven’t seen it yet. I will have to see if it’s on any of the major streaming platforms and give it a go. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it so I have no idea why I haven’t taken the time to give it a chance yet.
Friend of mine described it as a “Halloween-themed Creepshow movie”… and I can see where he’s coming from. It’s as much a spiritual successor to that series as anything else.
I can’t say definitively, there are a few really good ones and 30 years is a long time. Tales of Halloween is another good one, it’s closer to a true anthology though the stories are linked but not as blatantly as a single true interconnecting story as Trick ‘R Treat. It also has a more eclectic feel to its’ stories.
1 - Carpenter’s Halloween: it’s the very essence of Halloween itself: the fear of the unknown, the fear of death. Greatest Halloween-themed filM of all time and my favorite horror movie.
2 - Halloween Season of The Witch: an Irish warlock uses pieces of Stonehenge to attempt the ultimate blood sacrifice using Halloween masks. Pure Halloween spirit but not as elegantly simple and refined as Carpenter’s film.
3 - Trick R Treat: explores Halloween from the perspectives of children, teens, and adults. Rich Fall and Halloween imagery and the embodiment of Halloween spirit in Sam.
Honorable mention: Carpenter’s The Fog. I have to think this would have been set on Halloween if the annual anthology series had gone through. Imagine the same film but set during fall instead of spring and with Halloween imagery. Creepy killer ghosts stalk from an otherworldly fog. It’s annual Halloween viewing despite the setting.
Just saw this for the first time ever yesterday in theaters. I was expecting more. Maybe there was too much hype seeing all this Sam stuff for the last 15 years, but it didn’t do it for me like I thought it would. I liked it, just didn’t love it. I know this cause I saw the Sam NECA figure right after and I didn’t want to buy it lol.
