I was planning to paint my Myers Mask and was wondering if it’s ok to use Water base acrylic paint mixed with Liquid latex. I have heard that water based paint is not good for latex. Also what is the best brand of liquid latex to use?
Monster Makers offers Rd-407 mask making latex, and that stuff is pretty good. They also offer latex colorant. So technically all you have to do is pour a “little” bit of latex into a disposable cup, add a few drops of colorant, and mix. But remember, latex cures fast so you will need to hurry. That’s why I suggested a little bit so when it does cure, you wont waste too much.
As for weathering, acrylic mixed with water will do just fine. Dab it on, wipe it off with a paper towel.
Thank you! So it does it matter if the acrylic paint is water-based or oil-based?
It’s the acrylic that causes the cracking, so unless you plan to dilute the paint with liquid latex, I wouldn’t.
I was going to mix it 1:1 with Liquid latex, would it still crack?
I personally would reccomend using liquid latex or balloon latex as a base rather than liquitex. It will have a bit more durability in the stretch department. Ideally you want to prep the latex with an adhesion promoter first. The most accessible for that would be Naptha, you can pick that stuff up at Lowe’s. Even better would be Prosaide medical adhesive which is used mostly for adhering prosthetic makeup; and that can be picked up from fx supply houses. It dries tacky so when you’re airbrushing the latex paint, it bites right onto it. Craft acrylics work great to tint latex, and the oil paint would be used to tint rubber cement paint. Thats basically a mix of rubber cement, naptha, and oil paint. Really nasty stuff to use, but it really holds onto latex. Rubber cement paint also requires a sealer of some type since it has a tacky quality even after its set. I used to use it as a base coat years ago, and then use latex paints on top of that. Word of warning on the rubber cement paint, it’s pretty toxic stuff and you need to wear gloves, use a respirator with the appropriate filters, and have PLENTY of ventilation wherever you’re doing the painting. I hope this helps! I should also mention anytime you use naptha, use gloves and a respirator, definitely don’t want that stuff on your skin.
Thank you so much this is a huge help! I’m going try and pick this stuff up today.
What most do is make the latex thinner with ammonia or water, then do like a 60:40 split with 60 latex 40 paint. You should be fine using acrylic to color.
I bought balloon latex and that seems to mix fine with the multi purpose acrylic I have. Like everyone else said, usually 1:1 mix.
A latex-pro’s aide no tack-paint mixture seems to work best.
