I was wondering about what exactly James makes his Knives out of? All that I can find is “SAFE and lightweight material” and one person even said plastic with an aluminum layer, and sorry if I come off a rude, but there is no way I’m paying $140 for a plastic knife.
I believe it is aluminum with a plastic core. The $140 isn’t completely for the material used, but also for realism of it, quality of it, and ability to hold up over time. His knives are great quality and I’ve never heard 1 bad thing about them.
Thanks man… exactly right! I make my knives to look very realistic but yet very lightweight and safe. The material I use is actually rigid plastic with sheet aluminum bonded to the faces from the factory. It’s all solid like one piece and not flexible at all. We have a sign business and this material is actually what we use for outdoor signs… very tough! The aluminum faces make the subtle shine very authentic looking. The fact that they are “plastic” to some degree makes them public and con friendly vs a heavier solid aluminum or metal design. Every blade and knife shape is cut to order and can be any shape or length! I never make 2 knives that are exactly the same… small variances in each design keeps each one unique. But it all boils down to what the individual wants from their replica knife. I get $130 for the knife or $160 for knife and stand set WHEN I am able to do them. As stated above, the price of my knives reflect all the time that goes into each one… nothing fast or easy about constructing them at all! Very time consuming the way I make them!!! I’ve been making them off and on for nearly 15 years now and I haven’t had any complaints about the quality so far. Here’s a few pics of one of my Lamson replicas for the Lamson fans
Just before Halloween I busted out and cut 50 handles and made an attempt to get rolling with them but then my job keeps getting in the way lol. But yes, I am making some soon but with my schedule I can’t take payment up front because I never know how long it will take to get them made up. But I will be whipping some up soon with some nice stands as well.
Hey JC, do u mind saying where you source that sign making material or what its called? I’ve been doing that myself but if I could find it already laminated that would be cool.
Well thank you so much for the price info, I didn’t mean to come off as rude asking, it’s just that the way it was described to me was that the entire thing was plastic with an aluminum spray to make them look real, I meant no offense by any of this, just worried were I was thinking of spending my money. Thank you so much again!
We get ours here locally in Georgia in 4x10 sheets. I’m sure it can be bought in smaller pieces. But the material that I actually use for my knives is stock from back in the late 80s and early 90s that I have saved. The aluminum sheeting is thicker making the blade more rigid. The stuff we buy these days is definitely not as rigid as the old material. You can try a sign shop locally
