Most of us know by now that the man who started it all is back to produce and hopefully even score the music for the now delayed (until 2018) Halloween Returns.
The hype is certainly building inside me that he is back on board with the franchise, but does he still have what it takes to craft another sequel to his beloved cult classic?
I’ve seen every movie that Carpenter has made through out his successful career and I can safely say that he has surprised me over and over again, with his style of cinematography, story telling and most of all his iconic scores!
Although he’s brought us fantastic flicks such as The Thing, The Fog and Assault on Precinct 13… I’ve noticed that during the nineties he started to lose his creative elements in his movies.
This is my own personal opinion. Some of you may love all of his movies and I’m fine with that.
The point I’m trying to put across is that I just hope that he can produce a new story for his beloved character. Can he figure out a way to continue the story from where Halloween 2 (1981) ended with Michael burning to his painful death?
What do you guys think? Are you super hyped to see if Carpenter still has what it takes to bring back the original Myers that we all love? Or do you think that he will struggle to regain his name as “The Master of Shock”?
Keep in mind that John appeared on the documentary of the making of Halloween H20 (1998), where he stated that “After finishing H2, I realised quite quickly that there was no more story for Michael”. He said something along those lines haha.
Let me know what you guys think he will bring us in one of the most anticipated movies of 2018 - Halloween Returns.
I have to admit… I was excited at first. But to be honest, for some reason I really don’t think he’s going to have much to do with anything in regards to this new film. And that’s if it even comes out in the first place. But I hope I’m wrong.
Personally, after seeing other film makers do their take on myers,is there really anything else that can be done that we haven’t seen already? is the real question I’d like an answer for, I was excited at first, but after having a think about it, there’s very little to do with him, just look at what they did with Freddy
This is exactly what I’m trying to get across. I think Michael’s had his day on the big screen, if Carpenter couldn’t vision himself crafting a sequel to H2 back in the 80’s then that is for a specific reason… There is no more story and I completely agree with Carpenter on this. The only thing the franchise has done well in my opinion since H2 is reuniting Michael and Laurie in H20.
I am hopeful that John is involved and helping guide it the right way, however part of me thinks he is more or less collecting a pay check on the name.I also have an alwful feeling we will not hear anything for quite some time and Carpenter will either lose interest or it will get left in development hell.
Hope I am dead wrong though. The more involvement he has the better. It would be awesome if they gave us an update soon, like maybe John actually confirmed to do the score for the film, which would say a lot about how much he is invested in it.
If anyone can help bring it back right it will be John.
I hope that John does bring some originality back into the franchise and not just do it for the money. He could make such a great sequel to H2 if he puts his mind to it! I wish that he would be directing Halloween Returns though rather than producing.
I have really low hopes for it, because the horror franchise as a whole has done everything to scare people, if you want a good scare these days, you just need to look at the real world, unfortunately I can see this just being not only a money grabber, but a name for products like the Star Wars and Star Trek franchise, anything with the name on it, or Carpenter, it sells. Realistically too, the films have all got the same formula, someone is the killer, some people die, the killer is still alive, the last horror film I saw that scared me, was Sinister, because they used found footage and snuff movies, is there really any way to top that if it were Myers? Resurrection tried it, but it didn’t work as good
All valid points but what true Halloween/Myers fan does not want to get together with friends and walk into a movie theatre AND it actually be Fall and not Summer and see this???
I agree wih you man. To me the Halloween movies haven’t been scary since the original… They haven’t had that sharp edge of jump scares in them, unlike when John used his own style to show this to the audience. I remember first watching Halloween and it absolutely terrified me when Michael jumped out! You may disagree with me on this but the only Halloween after the original that truly terrified me, was the portrayal of Michael in H6. He just seemed so damn creepy in it, his kills were full of rage and the whole feel of the film felt scary, although it was a huge mess, I still enjoyed it. Sinister is one of the best psychological horrors movies to date in my opinion and your right. With Sinister they tried to do something new and it really worked well! I hope that Carpenter does do it for the fans and not leave us in the dark like the previous movies.
Realistically Michael is such an icon, making him scary is a challenge.
A good film can still be made, if written well it could hit all the right notes and give us something to love.
Proper score, decent attention to continuity, good actors, and inventive kills combined with a fresh take on Michael’s look would do it.
I think the best way to keep him scary is to keep him in the shadows and sort of mask his look. We have seen him so much now in the usual white mask jump suit, the best thing imo. providing they follow 2, is have some damage from fire or sometype of wild look that still retains the Michael we love while also giving him a sinister and maybe jarring appearance.
Not so much a zombie half mask, but some cool exposed bone or burned flesh.
Would be an excellent pay off if shot the right way and revealed as the film progresses.
Man this would be awesome! If Carpenter has anything left to give us with Michael, hopefully he brings back the true icon that we love! It’s a long way off this movie yet, so I hope he has enough time to bring us a good solid storyline to continue from H2!
I actually agree with you on 6, I got scared of it after the first film, plus Carpenter should do the Psychological aspect in it, if they had to really do a new take, they should start with his escape from the asylum like the animation from youtube that I saw a few years back, and then go from there, but to go elsewhere is tough, but it also takes some really good story originality, Michael, Jason and Freddy have done every way to kill a person, and while there are other methods which are ancient, they would be gruesome, but a lot of work for a killer and he wouldn’t be “supernatural” anymore
Whatever he comes up with should be good. This is John’s character, he knows how to tell a proper story with him. See I agree with you that they should show the psychological side of Michael! But problem with this is, that the movies that followed the original have sought of gone away from this idea… Especially Rob Zombie’s H1 and H2. He basically turned Michael into a killing machine, rather than keeping him as a force of nature.
Precisely, I dislike it that he’s a killing machine, instead of being creepy like Baghuul, if they used the found footage idea like Sinister, but Michael had escaped from the asylum as the starting point, then it goes to those that are owning his house and it’s getting restored by new owners, Michael gets his gear, but not the kirk mask, they use the Emmet Kelly mask first, make that as iconic as the kirk, and the kirk comes out at the end of the film
I think it would be amazing to use the Emmet Kelly mask finally! Even though it probably won’t get used, it would be so awesome to throw a little easter egg in a scene where a trick or treater walks by with the mask on.
I’m kind of indifferent about it I guess, I mean I love to see my Michael Myers but at the same time, I just wan’t them to try to come up/move on to a different thing, rather than milking a beloved franchise of mine. But if they have to make another Halloween, I just atleast hope it’s done right.
