Lol wow! I mean I should have expected this being from John, but this really just… it’s so exciting!

:myers:

sounds great, I’ve listened to it like 6 times already today.

This is honestly the second best version of the theme after H2 for me

I listened to this earlier and I fell in love immediately! The only thing I’m not crazy about is the 10 or so seconds of just clicking.

They are doing soundtrack listening parties at record stores across the country. Check to see one if there’s one near you!

H2 is definitely one of the great ones!

agreed, I really love the sound of a church organ

It’s ok. I’m really picky with the theme. Besides the original, H2 and the RZ films I’ve never heard one other version of it that I remotely liked, including redone versions (not including remasters) on later anniversary albums. Most just lack the visceral tone. The tone is ok with this one but it almost has the MIDI piano/background sound to it that I absolutely hate, especially towards the beginning. It’s better than most versions but not on the level of the ones I mentioned before, IMO. I can tolerate it.

I like it. It’s a bit different but sounds enough like the original theme. The theme from the other sequels after H2 never sounded right.

I like the H2 score, it’s a little disco strangely enough, but it fits right in with it being the “big universal studios sequel”. H3, while there’s not any “shape” themes is fantastic. I love the opener for H4, it’s somehow both nostalgic and horrifying, the soundscape of Fall. What was able to survive the cutting floor of John Ottmans score for H20 is fantastic, I love the softer orchestral arrangements. I think it has the closest relationship to this, mostly cause of the choice of traditional piano rather than keys.

So more on topic: This feels like a cut of a larger section, like this is scored to some specific action/scene given the odd pace and “pauses”. Unless the music really grinds to a halt during the credits. It’s a little hard to judge because of that, but I’m gonna have to say it’s a bit underwhelming, which is yet another strike in the “meh” category for me on this film so far. It’s very safe, I suppose I’m glad it’s not the Reznor-ified work harder not smarter version, but I’ve been a big fan of john re-working of themes, on tour and on his albums. His “new” Escape from New York theme is far better than the original.

The best justification is they truly are not re-inventing the wheel for just about anything on this movie, so that it slides in as nice 2-parter with H1. It’s not even an “H1” any more it’s a 2 act story (ironically a bit like Psycho).

I will say, the “lawn sprinkler sound” is such a classic John Carpenter move lol, it’s been a long time since that’s been emphasized.

I love the H2 one for being a bit darker and more synthed out. Its a bit less emotional kind of like the second film.

The h1 is a classic of course.

I really dig the soundtracks for the Zombie films honestly. I like what they did with the theme there.

But yeah this is a nice little work. Can’t wait to hear the full soundtrack.

I like most of it. Some of it sounds excellent, some of it not so much. Interesting though as the end credits them was leaked from a phone recording and that had a more rock vibe to it (use of guitars).

On to what I didn’t like to get it out of the way:
The high pitched sharp synthy keyboard parts layered over the higher noted and bassy piano parts in the beginning hurt to listen to a bit and I wish the higher noted piano there sounded more natural (sounds a bit too fake/artificial, but it’s not bad), but it ends 38 seconds in and goes to a more classic sound. The clicky part starting around 1:06 sounded a bit like moths hovering near a light, feels out of place, and a shrill synth part started around 1:34 again, clicky part again around 2:18-2:36 but this time with an almost clapping sound. So basically the parts I didn’t like as much were some of the beginning up to 0:36, 1:06-1:54, and 2:18-2:36, so a minute and six seconds to a minute and forty two seconds of it, the other minute and forty seven seconds I enjoyed and if that shrill synth sound layered in the beginning 36 seconds wasn’t there I’d like that as well.

The rest of the track had classic Halloween sounds with a bit of a twist, there’s even a bit from 0:58-1:05 that sounds like part of the score for the school segment near the end of Halloween IV. Not perfect, playing a bit to the synth wave crowd (like something you’d find on New Retro Wave), but a welcome return to a semblance of normalcy (which we haven’t had since Alan Howarth was doing the scores). I wish it was just John and Alan Howarth and/or Dan Wyman though to get a more atmospheric theme, but I realize John has been working with Cody and Daniel for his new music and concerts, and they are family, so they would be working together again.

I think the best main themes were of course the original (opening theme and ending theme, both differing from one another), the first soundtrack cd version with the heartbeat thumps, the one on the cover cd Halloween: Music from the Films of John Carpenter, the Halloween II version, the Halloween VI piano version used when Kara notices Danny missing and walking towards the Myers house (Empty Stomach on the original soundtrack, Run for your Life on the 20th Anniversary soundtrack), and the Halloween V version (though I think that the clicky sound was too prominent and doesn’t fit in as well as the prominent heart thump on the original Halloween soundtrack cd).

The Halloween IV version sounded too much like a dance mix (which stinks because the rest of the score is amazing). The H:20 score of course being orchestral feels anti-Halloween. The RZH1 version sounds like it’s being played on a toy piano. The Resurrection one feels halfway between H:20 and something a bit more traditional so it doesn’t really fit well enough, but it’s ok. The Halloween VI (theatrical) guitar theme I actually like but it feels out of place in the series. The part VI producer’s cut theme feels too artificial, though the end theme sounds better than the one near the beginning when Jamie was escaping (but it’s still artificial sounding).

Dan and John haven’t spoken in years. Alan and John don’t get along because of money.

The new track is ok. I’d prefer a regular piano any day over a keyboard sounding piano but, that’s me.

I love it!!

Very cool, I dig it!

Like it. The background sounds are similar to the version carpenter played at live events.
But the original 78 intro version will always be THE theme

Agreed. The regular piano gives it that raw and creepy feel to it. The original Exorcist went the same route .
