Just got my TOTS 1978, good but not great UPDATE: rehaul in progress, pics inside!

Well, I just got my hands on a 1978 after I saw a summer deal on collectables in a local shop, and I decided to bite the bullet since I already had a boogeyman and wanted another H1 mask.

This is after unboxing it and stuffing it, so far, I don’t think it’s bad, I like the sculpt, it looks like Myers to me, not necessarily H1 accurate myers but a decent representation of him, if it makes sense.

That’s kinda where it ends.

Let’s go with the obvious and a point that’s been already discussed countless of times already: this mask is HUGE. It’s comfortable sure, it’s not as claustrophobic as the 2018 or mildly annoying to wear for a long time like the boogeyman, sure, but it almost goes into bobblehead territory, and I think it’s a shame, because the sculpt is good!
The pull is also very thin in comparison to the boogeyman, and I think they really should’ve done it the other way around: this mask needed a thicker pull to keep its shape despite being very loose on the wearer’s head, and the boogeyman needed a thinner pull to achieve that perfect Castle stretch.

Now, to get onto the nasty things:

My specific copy has two imperfections on the back of the neck, one was excess latex that wasn’t cut properly and I had to cut myself, the other is simply a bit of extra latex that they left there, completely unpainted for some reason. Also notice the white paint getting streaky there.

This has to be the worst part, the paintjob. I seriously would’ve been okay if this mask came out all white without any shading at all like the OG, i’d greatly prefer it to what they’ve done here.
The lips have these black patches that make it look like poor myers has been stalking under the summer sun for hours and needed a bottle of water, not to mention, some of the black paint got smeared all over on the right side.
Blue shading isn’t that great as well especially the one that follows the right cheek, there’s a weird yellow undertone under the chin and in the neck area, black dirt and spots everywhere. The shine is… well, it is what it is, it’s like that on the boogeyman as well.

Now, to recap:
+Original sculpt, not accurate but a good representation of classic Myers, pronounced features make it look good on a shelf
+Comfortable

-Paintjob is awful
-Huge mask
-Imperfections
-Misleading article image.

Now, what’s next for this? Well, I’ll be trying my hand at doing a rehaul with liquid latex, white and pink paint, a bit of brown and a bit of grey. I don’t have an airbrush so I fear the latex boogers but I’m gonna risk it and experiment, it’s not like the actual paintjob is worth keeping, I’ve been asking you guys for tips a year ago, but I kinda chickened out because of fear of ruining my boogeyman, well, this is the perfect occasion to put myself to the test, there’s nothing to lose here anyway.

As you might have noticed I have not mentioned the hair, well, it’s because I haven’t touched it yet, knowing that i’d be rehauling it i’d rather keep it all organized like that and style it later after i’m done with the paintjob. I am planning to just pull the hair forward and glue it down with latex or bostik glue, but I noticed that the front hairline seems fairly easy to pull so i might just try to remove it all and glue it down from scratch, we’ll see.

Yeah same experience with my 78 as well. Honestly probably one of the worst masks when it comes to paint jobs with TOTS. The sculpt is pretty good (besides the size) just needs a repaint to really make it come to life. This was mine after a quick repaint.

Dang man, that looks great! It really is surprising how good these TOTS masks can look with just a little work.

That looks great dude! Please if you have any tips for the grime and shading, do share them if you want to!

I’ve brushed on five coats of Liquitex Titanium White + Liquid Latex + a bit of water, went with a very thin mix as I wanted to avoid the latex boogers things. I wasn’t sure it was working when I started the first coat but I can definitely see the difference now, and honestly, it’s much better than before imho, less is more right?

To put things in perspective:

I’m gonna do one final coat if needed right now and then let the mask sit for the day, so tomorrow i’ll do weathering (pink-brown mix in neck area, brown wash, light grey shade), what do you think so far?

To add onto my previous post, I tried to get rid of the two holes on the nose and chin caused by the crappy factory varnish, you think this looks better?

Already looking much better man. Usually when I do heavy weathering I mix water with black or brown and apply to the desired area. As for subtle shading, dry brushing is my go to method. This will really make the mask pop. Also styling of the hair can really transform the look of a mask. I like to wet it all with a spray bottle and swirl it around making sure to separate the fibers. Make it look all crazy and not so straight. This ain’t a 78 but it’s a kirk that I converted using pretty much the same methods.
