This is all very informative… I know people have wondered about the Image having more than 20 copies so maybe a row call of them may not be a bad idea either. I own 2. One I overhauled as you see in my avatar and another all original… Both have all paperwork, disc, etc… I have seen quite a few overhauled already… I found #5 wrote on the one I overhauled, under the hair…

Randy, I believe your copy was a forgery based on your claim that the mask was smaller than other SLE’s. The copy that Colin alleged to be Ken’s “personal copy” that he tried to sell me for $5k, yes $5k!!! was smaller than other SLE’s. Col told me the mask was smaller than the production SLE’s and had even sent me a side by side pic to show me the size difference. The H1 SLE forgery that I know of was also painted and haired by Colin, but it was painted completely white and had no fleshtones. If your mask was also a forgery then that makes 5 confirmed forgeries that I know of.
After I turned down the copy he tried selling me for $5k, he offered it to me as a heads up trade for my 2k. I turned that offer down, then he tried to sweeten the deal by including a Shat he converted (copy Josh Warren now owns) into the trade deal, but I declined. Finally, he offered me the SLE plus AHG’s old Kh (now owned by Hugo/Macleod) for my 2k and I still declined. Something told me to stay away from the deal and given what we all know now it was a wise decision.
Well, this is no good . There is already too much negativity in the Myers scene for more to be added. Yes, there are some recasts and retools out there floating around as I think that has been known for a while. I did find out recently that these other added masks were not officially sanctioned by Ken and he’s pretty upset with it. Colby can discuss further if he wants. When I first set out to acquire the #2 SLE from Donnie and did, I knew they weren’t all created equal after seeing the detail. I remember listing out who had what but it is fuzzy right now due to the lack of sleep and time away.

9/10. Ken/Colby (or 1 and 2 depending on how you look at it)
I know there were 2 blanks that were finished by Colin. One was Randy’s/MJ’s mask and another one, which is in a private collection. I thought Crofader sold one a while back too. I also know of a few others in collections but will leave them anonymous.
You can easily spot the recasts or pulls if you see the original. The latex is completely different, there is a lack of detail in the cheek area and the IL stamp is awful. They are surprisingly good for being illegal copies. As I know, this was all done behind closed doors. This is similar to the DB2 situation (yes, there are illegal copies of those out there as well).
I don’t think the value is tainted on the originals, in fact I think the opposite. The value should increase as far as I’m concerned as the rarity and history is masterful. How Dren’s copy is still available is astounding because it is the real deal original run. I can tell you I didn’t acquire any that inexpensively, that is for sure! If I weren’t transitioning to my other masks, I would have purchased it a long time ago.
I won’t sell my set as they are still some of the best masks created. They do trump the original KH/DW, especially when seen side by side. The problem being the size of course, but the sizes aren’t all the same either.
Someone mentioned the KH/AS masks as well. I will let that go for another topic but I will say this. I purchased 2 and had both redone by James. Nothing wrong with the finishing but I wanted James to put his touch on them. I will say both mask were not finished by the same artist. The signature finish on the one was easy to spot. I suspect…know, with very great evidence, there are more than copies floating around as well.
I really think people would be surprised to find out how limited Myers masks are…as I don’t think many, if any, really exist. Money talks especially behind closed doors.
DB2 recasts?! From the same duo of Colin and Andrew or elsewhere? This may have been common knowledge to collectors for a while but this is all news to me. Crazy.
Ken sold the tooling of the SLE to Andrew, so he can make blanks all day.
That is the reason I sold my SLE, I got screwed in the original deal, when I was sent a damaged copy that had to be repaired, and the limited number kept rising
I’m just glad I can now legally make and sell as many Halloween II masks as I want
Well if that’s the case the SLE’s value will plummit, if Andrew can pump them out at will on any given day of the week, and with the DB2 recasts floating around, i know Colin’s owned them so that’s not a suprise to know either, i put nothing past that guy anymore and some of his associates.
Guys, recasts are smaller and usually the detail suffers, so a recasted DB2 would do nothing to hurt the value, but when you have someone pulling masks out of the original mold or making new molds with a tooling, when something is sold as limited, that is just criminal. And never worry, Dennis is a man of his word, he will never sell another DB2 or his toolings.
I have kept my mouth shut about the SLE thing for years, but the deal was a fountain of mistrust from day one.
The whole deal has been laughable. And I know I will get crap for this, but I really don’t care, I think the whole SLE thing really stunk. Everything from the two year wait, to the number of masks going up while we waited, to the size of the finished mask, to getting a damaged copy, to Ken selling the mold and tooling, to the uncountable number of SLE blanks that have been made and than the final nail in the coffin, Andrew does a clay pour into the SLE mold and calls it a new KH/DW/AS mask!
This thing was suppose to be LIMITED!!!
The whole thing is the reason I hardly post here anymore and did everything in my power to put out a Halloween mask into the legitimate market that everyone could afford!
So,I want to be crystal clear on this.I am pretty certain of the time frames but want to be sure.Andrew was given the SLE through Ken quite some time after these phony SLE’s were popping up,making the unofficial copies recasts and not actual pulls from the SLE mold, correct?
If they came from Andrew, than they were pulled out of the original mold or from new molds made from the tooling, given that you can only get about 20 masks per mold, hence they wouldn’t be recasts. Remember, the SLE was smaller than hell, it didn’t even fit my daughter who was 5 when she got it.
DB2 recasts, yes, but not from retoolings as Chris mentioned and Dennis is clean. Anth, I disagree about the value of the SLEs originals falling. The mold can be poured and repoured by the all day long but it doesn’t mean it will look like the original. You have to know what you are doing and though it sounds as simple as pouring a mask, I don’t think it is. I don’t think you can place any of their work into Ken’s category. I can say you will see a HUGE difference, even pull wise.
This is also one of the reasons why I made a deal with James not to finish any other SLEs, because from what I’ve learned in the Myers hobby is NOTHING is limited…NOTHING!
Chris, I did hear about your mask and the problems with everything but that wasn’t the case for the other 4 (of the original 5). Sorry to hear and nobody should ever have to deal with that. I think another high ranking member here has a similar story too.
One reason I think this is good to get out into the open is that it will eliminate the sale of future masks. Yes, I realize people won’t care and still purchase behind closed doors but if you can’t post/sell/trade your mask because it will be known to be a newly poured/recast/whatever, then that will help control the population. Everyone knows where the originals are now so if there is a sale, you can track back. We have to police ourselves with everything else, why should this be any different?
Okay, that puts a different paint job on the scenario for guys who own copies from Santagato. That would make my old copy(Currently MJ_23’s) not an offical copy, which I always knew but not a recast. While that is worse from the legit owners perspective,it’s better for a person who owns one,at least knowing it came from the mold and isn’t some Frankensteined copy.Andrew told me he was given the blank from Ken that was used for my old copy, which is obviously BS but I would feel better knowing it was pulled from the mold and not recasted.
I honestly hate this crap… Why do people do this??? People think they are paying for a RARE mask when in fact it is a recast… Seriously everyone… Can we all be honest at least just for once and bring this hobby back to where it was years ago??
Take my word on this one, I know the process, it’s my business
If the masks are coming out of the original mold, assuming the mold isn’t shot, or if the pulls are coming from new molds from the tooling, assuming the person is semi competent in making molds, there will be very little difference in the pulls. The only difference will be the thickness of the pulls, depending on how long they let them dwell and the type of latex used.
The finish of the mask, well that is a different story altogether.
I believe the original SLE’s will retain their value because they were done by Ken, but everything else that has happened with the projects creation that was suppose to be limited, turned me off to the whole thing.
Personally, I like Andrew, although I am sure he will feel different about me now, but I feel the way that the SLE thing was handled was very unprofessional and I have been holding onto these feeling for years. Remember, when I paid for mine, there were only suppose to be 5 masks made !
I am not doubting you Chris (TOTs is doing a hell of a job). You know the process well better than I. I was going by the semi competent angle, like you said, and seeing side by side an original with a newly pulled one. Finishing aside is a different story: An example would be the purple hair on Colin’s masks. Anyone ever wonder why that was? I believe it is from dying the hair and mistakes made during the process. I am not an artist but going by what I’ve heard/been told. I just made the observation and looked into it for an answer.
I hope the type of latex Ken used is hard to come by as well. I’m pretty sure he won’t help them acquire the same type but the info may be out there already. I do know they retools do not have the same quality latex as the originals, not by a long stretch.
I won’t sell group but if I needed to for some reason, I can trace everything back properly and give 100% accurate descriptions.
I also have no issues with Andrew, only Colin. I have caught him in so many lies and false claims that it is mind boggling. I have more but mm.net can only handle so much at one time, lol. Plus I’ve been on here too long away from the family. I’ll try to check back periodically.
