Ken Hertlein/Dick Warlock Signature Mask Thread

Gorgeous! Good observation. I wonder how many other copies have that dimple.

You have my old copy Josh. I purchased it from Russ Lukich 10 or so years ago. He bought it directly from Ken. The dimple on the nose was caused from the mold breaking down. You’ll notice earlier copies don’t have this feature.
Of all the Myers masks I’ve owned through the years, this was my favorite.

Great info and pictures, guys!
Newly styled hair on #4. :sunglasses:

LOVE this thread Frankie and really glad you took the time to do this up proper! Being that this project was nearly 14 years ago (FOURTEEN YEARS AGO??!! :open_mouth: ) it’s very easy for information to be lost, forgotten or simply ā€œre-imaginedā€ over time.

Due to this I think this thread is invaluable as a sort of historic reference guide to what many consider to be the best Myers mask replica of all time.

With this in mind, I directly spoke to Dick about three pieces of info concerning the KHDW’s making that seems to often be uncertain in our community.

My questions to Dick are below with his answers directly succeeding each question.

Hope this helps out a bit and I hope everyone will continue to add to this awesome thread! This may be my favorite thread I’ve ever seen on the board to date by the way.

Question #1: I’ve heard that the actual hero was in hand and then some say that only pics were in hand when the KHDW was made.

Dick’s answer: ā€œThe original HERO mask was thoroughly examined by Ken at my house. He also had photos to work from.ā€

Question #2: I’ve heard that measurements of your head were taken along with measurements of the hero during the making of the mask.

Dick’s answer: ā€œNo, it was not during the making but prior to. Again at my house before starting the first sculpt.ā€

Question #3: Also how many of these were actually supposed to be made?

Dick’s answer: ā€œNo definite amount was established in the beginning. Ken just decided that he didn’t want to continue making them after # 33. He didn’t want anything more to do with the Myers character. Of course that didn’t last too long.ā€

Thanks for the amazing contribution, Benny! I’ve edited the initial post accordingly. :sunglasses:

I can’t quote sources, but I was always under the impression that the two (Dick and Ken) had a falling out that caused the run to end? Several people who knew Ken said that he was getting a 50/50 cut from the $300 and out of that $150 he had to pay for supplies, shipping, etc., and it became not a good deal for Ken to continue. They also said that Dick was ā€˜on Ken’ about doing masks quicker and doing more of them. Not saying this happened, but it was what I heard back then. Anyone else hear anything similar?

I remember reading that, too, Josh. Can’t remember where. I had noted it in the initial post, but thought better of leaving it as I don’t know just how true the claim is. By the way, Josh, do you recall if the #8 copy has a gold inscription?

No, the # 8 copy was not a gold sig. copy.

Thank you much, mate! So, it can now be safely stated that the gold inscriptions stopped at number seven.

Thanks for the info Benny.

I had the great pleasure of meeting Dick Warlock and his lovely wife Cathy at the 35th convention, two of the kindest, most humble people you’ll ever meet I might add. Anyway, I talked with Dick extensively about the original run of KH masks and everything Benny stated is true, and would also like to clear up any debate/confusion about what the mask truly represents here for new and senior members. Straight from the source, the KH/DW mask is a replica of how the Hero looked almost twenty years later, not during the production of the movie. It’s been said many times before, but the only way to believe it’s full potential is seeing one these pieces in person.

Thanks for the post, Erik! The part about the KH/DW being created to look like the hero mask 20 years later is making me scratch my head, though, as this is what the hero looked like circa 2004 (roughly 20 years after H2):

The hero mask surely looked similar to this when Ken examined it at Dick’s place in 2002. The hero mask would have been so far removed from how it looked on screen that someone would have been hard pressed to screen-match it to either film. It makes sense that the idea might have been for Ken to use what he learned about the hero mask and how it looked circa 2002 and reconstruct it to have a shape similar to how it would have looked in more favorable condition.

Thanks Frankie! I can agree with that theory, the copy you have is a beautiful example. Congrats btw, and thanks again for starting one of the coolest threads ever. :sunglasses:

Thanks for the props, Erik, and I’m glad that you are enjoying the thread! :drinkers:

Excellent thread, Frankie. If more masks had a story remotely similar to that of the KH/DW, we would be treated more often with threads parallel to this.

Thanks, Trevor! The NightOwl NMM78 is another replica that needs a thread to preserve it’s history. Someone with more knowledge than I on the subject should make that happen. :bulb:

Agreed, (particularly the ā€œ4-Stampā€) there is something very special about these masks much like the magic the KHDW has.

Great idea! I think Paul(50-one-50)would be the best candidate to start that thread…

I concur! :drinkers:

_I just want to add…I don’t know of ANY Myers replica mask ever made that can pull off this shot outside of a KHDW.

This is from the television version of Halloween II, a shot of the hero that was added for the television version. Looks just like a KHDW to me!
