How possible is it for someone to recast an original 75 Kirk mask? I know they are fragile in today’s condition with them rotting, but could it be done? Has it been done before? I know there was a huge debate back in the day regarding Terry Lambert ‘allegedly’ stealing someone’s real 75 Kirk and sending him back a recast, but nothing is set in stone with that story although I definitely have my own opinion on with it, I don’t want to make accusations especially for something that has died down now
I think nags 98 proto is probably the closest thing to a real 1975 kirk or a nightmare, Justin Mabry has a mask called the “shat” which is now trick or treat studios Kirk mask and that as Wel comes a direct cast of a 1975 kirk so those are probably ur two best options. The medley kirk was also casted and the h2sm, and the DIY masks came from that which is an original 1975 kirk cast as well.
It is 100% set in stone with pics and a thread of Jay Allens kirk being stolen, the best option we have is the TOTS kirk for a cheap price but it’s rather bloated, if we had to replicate a 75 Kirk, 3D printing would be the best route if someone would let their kirk get scanned, Jimmy at Spookhouse props has his 10/31 mask it’s pricey but a ton of work goes into it
Funny enough, after I made this I started reading the Jay Allen thread again and forgot that it had gone to court and everything. Has been years since I last read it but remember I sold my CGP warlock after reading it because of how disgusting it was. I still can’t believe it today, I’m just glad Jay managed to get another 75 Kirk. Not many can say they have had two kirks in their lifetime wasn’t one of Don Posts reissue of the Kirk later on in the 90’s or early 2000’s 3D scanned from a 75? I think I remember reading about that but remember the mask didn’t come out too good? Something like that, perhaps you could correct me on that.
None of DPS kirks were scanned, but one had been made using the face and had the ears resculpted that is owned by Jimmy Falco today, he has a thread going into detail about it’s origins
The 98 KIRK “Proto” derives from the 75 KIRK. Either a direct pull from a production mold (likely) or a recast of a production Kirk. This was never released and I believe there are only three known copies of it. This is the mask recast by Nik to produce all of his accurate masks. Again… This 98 Kirk was NOT laser scanned from anything. It is direct from the 75 mold, or cast from a Kirk from the mold.
The 99 Shatner is the one that derives from a laser scan and retool. It was laser scanned FROM the 98 Kirk and was milled out of foam. Darren Perks took a clay press from that foam piece and retooled it into the 99 Shat we know today. You can reach out to Darren directly and ask, he will tell you the same.
You could still recast one If you own it. Sean clark did it back in the day, can you believe he got a mint 75 kirk for $25 bucks at a Fango convention back in the early 90’s! O__o
You would foam fill the mask to keep its shape intact, then make a mold of that yadadah
the problem of recasting the old school way is the new copies come out smaller than the original from latex/mold shrinkage
Very informative! So Nik’s masks are just a recast of an actual 98 Kirk which is just a recast or direct pull from an original 75k mask or mould? So it’s a copy of another copy of the 75? Very interesting!
Yes sir. His 75K, 98 (Proto, and test mask) and his MMK are all direct recasts of the Don Post 98 Proto. The MMK being retooled. His nightmare, nightmare UL, his newer H4, and a few others I believe, are recasts from Billy Kirkus’ old Kirk.
I personally believe his 98 Test mask to be the closest to the original Kirk we’ve ever had.
It’d be possible, anything is if you spend enough. But if you want a mask accurate to the DP 75 Kirk and don’t want to spend a fortune get a Starkiller blank. It’s a direct lineage as the face is a cast of Billy Kirkus’s original 1975 DP Kirk.
I really don’t buy Seans story of getting a Mint Kirk. I think he bout a recast and just claimed he found one… Someone please show me 1 picture or video of his “find”
It was done 20 years ago and one of the things that really started the independent Myers Mask hobby. Those who have been around for a long time may remember it. Around 1999 Sean Clark had an original 75 Kirk. He had a friend recast it and sold them as Myers masks. At the time it was the most accurate you could get because nothing else was out there.
Looking back there were a couple of issues. First, because it was a recast a lot of the details in the cheek and forehead were washed out and not as bold. Also, at the time it wasn’t really known that when you do a recast the new ones will run 10-15% smaller. That mask was very small and didn’t fit most people.
Shortly after that new artists started popping up with their own custom versions. The hobby has come a long way from then. One other disappointing thing about the Sean Clark masks. Sean stated that the process his friend used to recast the 75 Kirk completely destroyed the mask. I am guessing if he did it over again he wouldn’t touch that mask.
