“The film takes place 40 years later, so you’re not going to have that same mask, it’s not going to be this pristine, beautiful thing that it was in 1978. You have to approach it from that standpoint. I had 40-year-old masks that I studied and looked at how they broke down, how they wrinkled, how they did this and how they did that. I also took into account the context of the film. Where is the mask now and where has it been for these 40 years? Without revealing anything, I took that into context. I had hundreds of photos and books.”
Christopher Nelson also says, “The point was to get back to the original, and to bring Michael Myers to life again, to bring that character, that feeling that you get, I really approached it more as a feeling than I did trying to copy the original mask.” Everyone, from director David Gordon Green to co-writer Danny McBride, and now Nelson, are certainly saying the right things about this movie. Nelson continued, discussing the importance of the mask and what it does to help shape the character of Michael Myers.
“I wanted to create the character of Michael Myers, not just the mask. You’re not creating just a mask. You’re creating a character. You’re creating a feeling that you get that does have an expression. The mask does have an expression, but also the mask looks completely different in every single angle it’s ever been photographed at, and I wanted that feeling too. I wanted the feeling that when you saw Michael Myers, it morphs, it changes, it looks different from every single angle, like the original one did. I can safely say we accomplished that.”
So the weird part is he is saying they looked at old masks… but he doesn’t mention looking at the actual original mask that was revealed to fans a few months back that everybody has seen. It seems like they would just reproduce that mask.

Kind of weird mixed signals. On one hand it’s great that he’s got the right track, on another it’s weird that he’s not just reproducing the original as it looks pretty fucking creepy… and well it’s how the mask did degrade over 40 years.
I’m also worried they will try to reproduce it… and fail. Because I know artist have been trying for decades to make the perfect mask.
I have mixed feelings on this, to be honest. If the mask looks as old and deteriorated as the original, I’ll probably be disappointed a bit I think. And like you said, why not just replicate the original as it is today if that’s the direction they wanted to take? Idk…
Kind of disappointed this is the direction they’re going. Sounds too similar at least in concept to the Rob Zombie mask which is a strange choice considering those were the most recent films and you’d think they’d want to distance themselves from that to avoid confusion. But hey it might look cool.
I personally think this is the way to go with it. First, there is more to this movie than just the mask. The story, atmosphere, and acting are all just as important. It wouldnt make since for the mask to look identical to the 78 mask. I have faith. No reason not to at this point.
What I hope for this mask is that it becomes a worthy successor to the original. NO mask will ever top that masterpiece, but I would hope that this mask becomes one of the major fan favorites of the whole series. One that all collectors HAVE to have in their collection, not just to say they have a mask from each movie, but because it seriously looks that good.
Another thought I had was, I wonder how the mask will stretch on him? Will it be like the Nick castle stretch from H1, or will it be more like the dick warlock stretch of H2? Or maybe somewhere in between like Tommy Lee Wallace wearing it in the closet scene. Personally, I’m hoping it’s either the castle stretch, or the Wallace Stretch.
I can understand if it’s not that close to how the mask looks today, because the mask is in a lot different shape all because of H2. In H1 it’s supposed to be a white mask with black hair, not a bunch of skin tone and a lot lighter hair.
So it’d be cool to see it in the original colors and original style hair, instead of being matted down. But I hope the mouth is stretched out like the mask really is today because that gives it a really creepy vibe, and makes sense with the way the Castle stretched the mask.
If the painting that JLC shared actually resembles the 2018 mask at all, then it looks like that’s what they did. But I guess we’ll see…
A 60 year old man can still be pretty shredded and capable. Look at Mel Gibson or some of the health nuts out there. The age isn’t a big deal to me. Who knows what he’s been up to since then.
Based on the description, I don’t think we’re expecting another Rob Zombie rotten mask, but just a bit stretched out with dry rot. Something more like an old Don Post ‘The Mask’.
If it looks even remotely like this, I will be happy.
I know what they’re trying to do as far as continuity and being realistic. In reality, the mask obviously wouldn’t look the same as in the original movie.
Look, in several interviews I’ve read that this movie will take nods at the other sequels. Why not make a nod to H4 (or even H1) by having MM steal a mask from a department store? This way the mask could still look like the original. The only way I see this not being a possibility is if Haddonfield would never sell this mask given the history.
Otherwise I would also reference the on-set photo above that the mask appears non-weathered to me, but maybe that’s a scene from the beginning of the movie showing where MM ended up after the balcony fall.
In Halloween 1 they said he stole some masks meaning more than one from that Nichol’s store among other things & also in the Halloween comic book series it shows that Michael Myers has multiple masks so they really didn’t have to use the same beat up mask but I guess the others would age over the years as well unless he took care of them. HaHa
Well, if they couldn’t do a total Kirk like mask due to rights issues,I can see them being able to use the weathering and ageing to hide the differences.
So it can be “close enough” to pass off as the same mask be without being a clearly Shatner looking face. Hope they can get it close enough to be believable.
