Mask sealing necessary

So I finished painting a mask with latex based paint, is sealing this mask overkill, if not is there a sealant I can use that doesn’t require an airbrush

Sealing is necessary, especially if you used any washes that weren’t latex based. For a matte look, use Plasti-Dip. For H1s and H2s though, I use Crystal Clear Satin for a slight sheen.

what kind of satin crystal clear? is it like a polyurethane coat?

It’s Krylon Crystal Clear Satin Finish.

I’m sorry for asking so many questions. if i go with the plasti dip on non-latex based paint that would reduce the risk of the paint cracking right?

It’s never a good idea to paint a mask with paint that isn’t mixed with latex, and if you did, I’m not sure Plasti-Dip would be of any benefit because I’ve never tried to seal a mask that’s been painted that way. My assumption is that it would continue to crack under the sealant. The Plasti-Dip would only marginally increase the lifespan of the piece.

would thinning the latex paint for washes work?

If you use a very light wash using acrylic paint over the latex paint I doubt it will crack off. Most of the wash gets wiped off and acrylic paint does flex a bit.

Don’t wash with watered down latex paint. That will cause all kinds of problems. A wash should be water and acrylic only.

Plasti-Dip does not protect against cracks that already exist, even Pro’s Aide can only do so much. I know from personal experience unfortunately.

Any paint not mixed with latex on the mask can still rub/flake/come off with a sealant. The problem is that the paint doesn’t technically adhere to the rubber. Applying a sealant over top would only be coating the paint itself (which isn’t attached to the base layer). I hope I’m explaining correctly. All of that being said, it completely depends on if this is a display piece or a piece to be used/handled. If it’s a display piece (not to be touched), acrylic is just fine. Especially on a Myers. That white sucks up a lot without letting go.
