I have been coming here for years but unfortunately no longer a secret like it was in the good old days before everyone found out where it was and now throngs of people in South Pasadena’s Century House.
I don’t get why they even moved it. What was wrong with it being where it was? To place it near the train tracks just look so off. And how did they even do that ripping it up out of the ground? Was there a basement? I wonder what the original area looks like now and if another house was build over it.
The house owner rents business space within it, and a chipped white painted house doesn’t exactly entice customers. I agree they should paint it white, as the blue is a bit off putting, but not like how it looked in the movie. There’s also the fact that some property owners of famous movie houses range from being downright disdainful of gawkers to simply discouraging them. The Amityville House was not only picked up and moved from its original address, but the windows changed to deter sightseers, and the Kent House from the Man of Steel movie was straight up demolished because the HOA subdivision across the street from it was complaining about the gawker traffic. The TCM house was also picked up and moved from its original address to be closer into town when the owners turned it into a restaurant. While the owners of the TCM house acknowledge its horror history, I doubt they’d appreciate full costumed cosplayers showing up like we do to the Myers house.
As I understand it the entire row of houses that the Myers house was on was set for demolition to expand a nearby hospital, or something like that. The Myers house was saved from the wrecking ball by being moved to its present location. Unfortunately, not all of it was able to be saved as the back portion of the house that held the kitchen and the backdoor that Michael entered through couldn’t be taken with for some reason.
Okay, that makes sense. But damn, they couldn’t pick a better area? Seems so lost at that intersection. And they had to strip off the back part of the house? Damn. But what the heck kind of hospital complex did they have to EXPAND because watching the original movie, there’s no hospital in sight in that area for them to even do such a thing in. They should have decided that near wherever this main hospital was at.
It’s a little strange there, but honestly, it makes for easier sightseeing, as it’s right across the street from the hardware store I make the turn that Myers makes behind Loomis at the hardware store on at least a weekly basis. Easier than dealing with some of the intersections around there…
I take it you live by that area then? Seems odd they wouldn’t even bother putting the kitchen area back in place after they removed it initially. Still wish they picked a better spot that doesn’t seem like a last minute drop. I’d like to see what the original street looks like now where the house originally was.
Yeah, I live just on the other side of the river from the area. I think there’s a picture of the street from a few years ago, with the apartments there now. Soon enough, I’ll get the old address and go by it myself for photos for y’all.
