Michael’s heavy breathing in H78

So who was doing the breathing? Was it dubbed in later or was that Castle during the shoots actually breathing like that?

It had to have been dubbed in. I am a film major and have learned about how audio works and sounds in films. For how enclosed that mask is, and how clear the breathing sounds are, it had to have been added in post-production. As to who did it, I don’t know.

More than likely Tommy Lee Wallace or John Carpenter, someone who was readily available during the editing process to loop it in. It definitely sounds like they stuck a mic through the neck of the mask to capture that correct reverb. If you’ve ever put on a full-head mask, you’re immediately met with that sound when you breathe.

Same thing with Dave’s breathing from the end of the 2001: A Space Odyssey, it’s been proposed that it’s just Kubrick wearing one of the prop space helmets.

In “Halloween II”, Alan Howarth did the breathing sounds (he admits to this in the “Halloween 6” Producer’s Cut commentary), so it’s likely it was John Carpenter doing it in the original.

I’m almost positive the breathing and grunting were done by Tommy Lee Wallace. The grunting sounds a lot like his voice.

It’s neither Tommy nor Nick. I want to say it’s the re-recording engineer. I don’t know if that’s right, but I read somewhere that it was one of the sound people who took care of the final mixing. I think Castle actually said it himself.

Considering that Castle did the breathing sounds for Halloween 2018, I would jump to the conclusion that he may have done the breathing for '78 as well. However, the other replies have valid points, but we may not know for sure unless someone asks one of the main crew of the film.

Didn’t know that he did the breathing for 2018. Doesn’t sound like the original breathing to me which makes me doubt he did it for the original

For H18 at least, Nick Castle did all the breathing. He did have the mask there with him in the ADR studio, but I actually read (maybe on his Twitter) that they didn’t like the sound that it made, so he just cupped his hands over his mouth and breathed. That was the effect that they used.

Breathing had to have been done in ADR. Probably Tommy Wallace, also could have been Carpenter, but I doubt it. Although Shure developed the first wireless mic patent in 1957, it didn’t become popular until the mid-80s at least. So in my opinion, that’s gotta be ADR over wireless technology.

Yes, there were some instagram posts somewhere of him in the studio with a cheap myers mask doing some breathing ADR. But yes it sounds way different than the original.

Sean Clark told me in Halloween 1978, it was Nick. For Halloween II, so far, everyone’s unsure. But, I’ve also heard they sampled the breathing from Halloween which makes in Nick again. If that’s true, then Nick needs to get paid.

Yes i think so too. Maybe it was one of the sound engineers even.
I don’t see why they would bring in Nick just to do breathing noises.

Alan Howarth did it for Halloween II. He mentions it on the commentary he did for Halloween 6.

I asked Nick in Oct. 2021 if he did the grunting sounds in the original Halloween or if it could’ve been Tommy Lee Wallace as I thought it sounded kind of like Wallace. He told me it was neither him nor Tommy. He said it was some sound mixer/engineer guy who did those noises (can’t remember if he said a specific name). And then he said that he did all the breathing sounds for Halloween 2018 and Kills. I only asked about the grunting noises, but I imagine he didn’t do the breathing for Halloween 1978 either since he probably would’ve mentioned that when he said he did the breathing for 2018 and Kills.

Somebody needs to contact the sound engineer (if he’s even still alive?) for the original to confirm. I am so certain it wasn’t Nick Castle. Halloween was a shoe-string film and there wouldn’t have been one iota of thought into ensuring Nick did the breathing just because he was The Shape.

And yes, the H18 breathing sounds nothing like the original. Really, besides Howarth’s breathing in Halloween II, the breathing sounds never sounded the same across the series. And still it sounded different in Halloween II, just not as.

Your Right i’ve heard the same from other people that have asked nick the same question
