Hey guys! This is my first ever attempt at painting a mask. This is a NAG Classic 75 I bought partially overhauled from Ezra (prowlerproductions). Basically when I got it, it was painted completely stark white by Ezra, with the Kirk dirty blonde hair. First, I added the glue lines with rubber cement. I did an acrylic wash to dirty it up and then dry brushed in the “shadows.” I read somewhere on the forums that they used black spray-on hair dye on the hero, so that’s exactly what I did. It was very messy, but I’m happy with the results.
So I did most of the work 2 years ago, and seeing it now I realize that I ended up going a bit too dark on the weathering. I was trying to capture that kinda dirty, high contrast shadowy look from the film. Maybe I was a bit too overzealous. However, I’m still very proud of my work. It scared the crap out of everybody when I wore it last year, and it looks unique because of the small amount of work I put into it.
I’m considering redoing this soon and would really appreciate any critiques or advice you guys may have.
Looks creepy to me, very distinctive! The only thing that I would alter is maybe the proper left eye cut. Maybe I’m wrong, but to me it seems just a tad bit too “squinted” looking, but it’s very close. At the same time however, I think that adds to the distinctive look of the mask.
Thanks! The eye cuts are actually more symmetrical than they appear in my photos. It’s a very thin pull and a bit warped, so I had to fight with it to even get it looking like that. Feels almost vintage.
That reminds me, if anyone could recommend a better stand for display, that would be great!
Also, while examining it again I noticed three different signatures on the inside that I had forgotten about. Crazy how many hands this had passed through before mine. I can’t tell for sure who did what or if it has been overhauled several times. Maybe it was bought blank and incrementally worked on by various people?
Here’s Ezra as I mentioned before:
Here’s Benn7, who does truly amazing work, and I’m very excited to have a piece he worked on
And here’s one I need help identifying. Is this Nikolas?
It looks good to me man. That is Nikos signature so apparently he sent it off as a blank to Ben who did all of the work. He is an amazing artist and you don’t see too many of these masks pop up! I’d leave it as is, I like the hair color but I personally think the paint is badass
