My RUINED 1986 DP Myers Mask

:pumpkin: here it is… my Very first mask, a 1986 Don Post Myers Mask… i got this mask when i was 6… im still sick to my stomach over this :pumpkin:

quick story on this mask is i bought it Brand New in 1986 when it came out from a local shopping mall. i used to keep it on my bed post stuffed with plastic shopping bags, and kept it in the original Clear bag it was sold to me in… after owning it for about 19 yrs, My now Ex girlfriend gave me a Styrofoam head to put it on… i removed the bags, put it on the head and it looked great… well, about 2 weeks later it was actually melting… the latex around the neck was dripping to the floor… i took it off the head, stuffed it with newspaper and 2 days later it was rock hard… now, as you can see, its super fragile. if you poke it, your finger will go right threw the mask… thats was now 10yrs ago… here is what it looks like today R.i.P. :frowning: :myers:

Ah, so there IS some truth to this styrofoam head dilemma. What is it about styrofoam that kills these masks?

Sorry to see your mask in such bad shape, Bro. Damn, sad way for Mikey to go.

Ya know, on the flip side, you could get that fake light up fire stuff, help me out not exactly sure what called or where to get it, maybe halloween express or something, but with a little work it could be done up to look like the mask at the end of H2 when it’s on fire, just a thought to keep it as a display piece.

thank you. and trust me, i almost beat her ass for suggesting the styro head… lol. i like to tell people thats why i left her (even tho its because she was a psycho c**t)

so back to the topic, YES, there is truth to this… i hate when people tell me im full of shit, and i only say that because “the original hero is on a styro head and looked like shit” my story is REAL and the pics prove it… maybe one day i can get a custom piece made using the hair off of this mask to create a replica / remake of the '86 DP… anyone feeling bad for me, and wanna help me get my childhood dream back, PLEASE DO… id love to receive some free charity here…lol…
i tried to replace this mask and buy one, but im not shelling out $300 - $500 for the original 85/86 dp… id rather buy a KH, NAG or SSN for that kind of money…
but in all seriousness, i cannot say for 100% fact that the styrofoam cause mikeys demise here, but it seems pretty damn reasonable to think so considering no problems EVER until it was put on that damn head.
if anyone is willing to take on a project like i mentioned above , please PM me… now, i will go puke because this is not something i enjoy looking at :frowning::(:(:frowning:

AMAZING idea… i never thought of that… but how could somebody work on this with how fragile it is? i know Nothing about mask making. i just started collecting them again this week. (owned masks are in my sig)
if anyone is up to this challenge and could help me out on it, please, PM me… i have a little cash and alot of toys i could sell / trade… unless you feel bad for me and wanna “donate” your services, which is always GREATLY appreciated.
you my friend, just gave me a glimmer of hope here to somehow someway salvage this mask after all… hopefully i hear something on this soon… hopefully it can be done…

I might have a theory why this happened to your mask. Where did the styrofoam head come from? If the head came from a beauty shop or hair salon, it is possible there was chemical residue on the head. They use a lot of chemicals in salons, alcohol, hair dye, perm chemicals etc. If we are told not to stuff our masks with paper becasue it can deteriorate the mask. Imagine a head that has left over chemical residue. If certain products can damage hair if left on too long, imagine what it could do to the latex.

It’s too bad what happened to the mask. I can offer some advice that might help. As far as salvaging your mask. 99% of the mask restoration artists out there will not take on this project. However, there is one company out there that might, but there is a down side. If he did accept the project, his fees start around $1000. For that, you could buy 3 of these masks. Also, I do know what you are saying about not being able to spend up to $500 for another dp 85. There was a guy, just yesterday, on this forum that posted he was selling a dp 85. However, after speaking with him, he wants the high price that you suggested you cannot afford.

My best advice is you have to watch, almost on a daily basis for one to come up for sale on either Ebay, here or any other source. I am a collector of almost 25 years. When I am looking for an item, I will serch every day, several times a days for months on end. Actually, it can go into years if you include all the stores I have visited over the years.

To show you that there is hope here. This is my DP 85 that I got a little while back. I paid about $85 for it.

Rob

its not that i cant afford it, its just that i dont see this even being more than a $150 mask in Excellent condition… id rather buy a NAG or Kirk of some sort for that kind of $$ … but i do understand what your sayin tho… since the other day on this forum, i have spent almost $1000 on Halloween masks, knifes, replica pumpkins, props, etc… i am gonna start selling / trading my Halloween toys / collection to support my new mask habit.
so, if anyones looking to trade some masks for halloween collectables / toys / posters / signed dvds etc , hit me up. if you wanna know what i have, ask me what your looking for and i’ll let you know if i have it… i have too much to list… thanks…

Ive seen 85’s on the bay for $50. Just like Rob mentioned above, the answer is simple. Put a search on Ebay and check it several x a day. Also check the classifieds here as well. It may take some time but the juice is worth the squeeze.

oh trust me, i dont think ive logged off this forum since 3 days ago… ive been reading and learning a ton about the masks. i have also been on every website i can find and ebay non stop looking at all the masks that are for sale… i will keep watching here and ebay… tho i must say, id much rather buy from someone on here because ebay is a joke anymore… i just wish i started this years ago. alot of the masks i see that i want are not produced anymore, or just over priced … thanks guys.

F-it. Sue your ex. :drinkers:

Well I think yours is beyond repair, wouldn’t even try to send it to anyone as would prob end up as a pile of dust. :frowning: however I would think you could find a spray sealant to spray over it so it wouldn’t get any worse. Then seriously would try to find that fake light up paper fire stuff, put in the eyes and under the chin area, really think that would be cool looking, especially in dim lighting. Don’t give up hope on it!!

If you have a plastic bag over a styrofoam head, would that reduce the rotting?

Lmao… i wish i could… id like to fight her if i wouldnt go to jail… lol

While it’s irrelevant, but would napkins be safe for stuffing masks?

What about the theory I posted in my earlier reply about where the styrafoam head came from? If it came from a salon or beauty shop, perhaps it had chemical residue on it. This would accelerate the deterioration the mask. Do you know where the head came from?

Rob

my condolences …i feel really bad for you and the mask

i had the same thing happen to the same mask!..it wasnt on a wig form, but i noticed the latex started to melt after a while…evey day i looked at it there was a bigger and bigger puddle of gooy latex under the mask , untill one day…it was all gone  …nothing left but the hair :open_mouth:

It was a brand new styrofoam head from a cosmotology store. Never used. Im sure it was some type of chemical reaction of some sort. Maybe it was nothing at all and just decided to melt one day… But i promise you one thing, I WILL NEVER USE ANY STYROFOAM HEAD EVER AGIN NO MATTER WHAT… Just incase…

Damn that sucks man. Sad to see such a classic mask rot. I have seen this happen to most of the 85 and or 86 "The Mask"s. I believe its due to the latex they used…so cheap…and not gonna hold up for awhile.

I wanna cry. Oh well,:-)all the new masks i buy will be better than that anyways. Im saving up for the handiboy kirk next… Yayyyy, i cant wait.

Alright brothers here’s proof…I bought this in 1983 @ universal studios in Cali came home popped it on a NEW wig head and it melted over the course of…a few YEARS. :open_mouth:
But sure enough, the Styrofoam killed it.
