Myers Accuracy (the follow up)

I’m posting this as a follow up to my last thread, which began on a bit of a negative note. I’d prefer to start my point on a positive on, if y’all don’t mind me posting a new thread.

In my last thread, a lot of people were saying “technically, if you want accurate, shoudn’t you just paint a Kirk mask white and peel off the sideburns?” There is a difference between “the same method” and “accurate to the original prop”.

A lot of people argue that there isn’t enough reference to paint the mask accurate, or that the mask was completely white in h1, or that there is no definite look of the mask and that it varies in every image.

So everyone can understand what I’m referring to, here is an image I mapped out a while back. It’s a tad dated because of lack of reference, and I used my lap top pad for this (not a steady mouse), but this gives you the basic idea for the main areas you see it.

The flesh varies in consistency (sharpness, blurriness, edges…), but the general area is about right. While the mask does look completely white in some images, it’s the images that stay consistent with those markings that prove to be on the real mask. There is no gray shadowing, only white paint over the original Kirk paint job. Perhaps a bit of natural weathering. The only shadowing on the lips may be due to the original color of the Kirk’s lips in contrast to the white. Obviously, there is weathering on the mask during H2.

The white was a mess on the original masks. You can tell because even the stunt mask has a sloppy neck. I don’t believe either mask was ever painted entirely white.

People also use the mask in Dick Warlock’s possession as a frame of reference to the paint scheme. This is a false thing to do. At some point after Halloween 2, the mask was repainted. I emailed Dick Warlock about this, and he said he knew nothing about it being repainted, but it’s fairly obvious when comparing this image to images before it’s time.

This image is one taken that shows the state of the mask when used in the movie, on the fireplace of Dick Warlock’s house next to the Friday the 13th Part 4/5 hockey mask (1985 at the very earliest, but probably after that).

I’m hoping this thread gives members with a lesser vision on the mask some insight into the real deal. Comments and conversation is welcome here.

Here are a few pictures to ponder if you’re unsure.

Thanks for posting this man. It’s always nice to see a post that isn’t about a new mask someone got (not that theres a problem with that )

Very interesting read and I enjoyed it. Learned something new too. Muchos gracias.

Good Points but also remember there was 3 masks used for H1. I doubt any of the 3 had the exact same paint scheme even though they may have been converted the same way. Here’s a pic of all 3 at the wrap party worn by Carpenter,Castle, and Wallace. Dicks mask is 1 of the 3 but no one knows for sure that one of the other 2 weren’t used for the majority of the H1 Movie. Here’s the pic with all 3.

Also there is this pic from 1980 SNL with JLC. One of the 3 Masks used. Is this Dicks mask?

There’s only one mask used as the “hero” (mask worn for close ups and detailed shots), and one other stunt mask known to be used (schoolyard scene, end scene, also used for the end scene in H2, with the blood tears). It’s said that the third mask is the one Bill Malone painted, possibly used for the unmasking scene, but that isn’t proven or certain.

Nice SNL shot by the way. That could be the mask Warlock owned (hero H1 and H2 mask).

is there a link to this SNL skit???

IMO the Bill Malone mask looks nothing like the 3 pictured in the wrap party if you blow the pic up.

Bill Malone Mask

Like I said, not proven or certain.

The Bill Malone Mask looks JUST like Ray Liotta…you know,… a Goodfella… :stuck_out_tongue:

JC-

1.) Hil-Goddamn-larious!
2.) Dead-on

Holy Necropost, Batman! Seriously though, good topic to resurrect.

I whole heartedly agree with this sentiment. I feel like I’ve compiled a damn good library of good, quality, behind the scenes pics of the masks, and I feel like these are the ones that offer the BEST view of the weathering on the H1 mask. In fact, I plan on using these to give JC reference when the time comes for my mask to get painted.

As you can see, the non-white fleshy areas nearly encompass the entire area beneath the chin and jaw. There’s a dark, circular pattern around the pin hole. The back of the ears seemed to have been missed by the air brush. The hairline where the eyebrows and sideburns had been has patches of white missing. The glue lines themselves seem to have been haphazardly removed, leaving behind small bits of blue and flecks of hair. When I look at the mask, the weathering by the end of H1 seems pretty cut and dry, actually.

You know, this thread has changed my opinion. I used to believe that originally they had painted the hero all white, and some of the paint had rubbed of due to constant handling. But these pictures prove to me that it was just painted lazily   :sunglasses:
