Myers mask pricing assistance?

Do you guys ever e-mail an eBay seller, or any seller for that matter, to try to help them with information on a Myers mask or a vintage mask, including name, price, etc.? Is it kosher to do so? It seems like every time I see someone list a mask high and I send them information on the mask it seems to offend them that their grail isn’t worth what they thought… sometimes even argueing that it is in fact as valuable as they listed it as. Reminds me of when someone asks $30,000 for a rare item on PAWN STARS and then the expert says, “…um, no, like $100.” then suddenly the owner of the item insists the expert is wrong. PUHlease. Get over yourself. I think my helpful e-mails may stop as I don’t think anyone ever appreciates it. What say you?

Yea,i can see how many would take offense to you emailing them about that,i’d imagine a few would say mind your own goddamn business and that is putting it mildly  that pawn star show is funny, one bloke took in his Hyabusa and wanted $16000 they offered him $8000 or so and he had a little ponder then took the offer lol what a nutter he lost a fortune all because he was desperate to sell.

Yeah, I think you hit it on the head there at the end Josh. Personally, I’ve found it to be a waste of time. I’ve been there and tried to send a friendly helping hand in those types of situations and it’s never been met with anything but pure contempt. I think eBay is just a haven for people deliberately trying to scam others into more money than what something is worth. It’s pretty much a losing battle. I guess if someone gets taken for a ride by a seller, I can least say it’s wasn’t me.

I don’t know, I personally think it’s a good thing to contact them. By letting the person know the real value, it gives them a chance to make the correction in price. If they don’t that’s on them but you have did your part.

As i’ve always said,no one has a gun to their head making them buy things.
do your homework and you’ll not go far wrong, don’t and buy at your peril.

Maybe I am just a dumb @ss who thinks there is generally nothing but good people out there not intentionally trying to rip someone off… which is why I would generally write some info. about the mask, a lot of times with a link to MM.net for the price guide in the gallery… but even then I get BS response like today telling me that someone already offered them $1,200 on a $50 mask.

That is a good deed what your doing man,not many i know of do stuff like that but unfortunately there are a lot of big ego’s and money whores out there who hate people butting into their business.

Haha, I can only imagine how butt-hurt some dudes get when you send them a freindly factual email on how much their piece really might be worth. I’ve never done it myself, but the funny thing is, I bet those sellers really know their masks aren’t worth what they start 'em off at. As soon as they hit submit to post their Buy It Now auction, they’re on the defensive against a professionally “negative” email. In the end, they know they’re not gonna get what they initially started the auction at, and for some, the price does come down. Why can’t most people just start it off at zero and let it ride? Like JC’s…his auctions are great to watch, and that’s the way all online auctions should go.

Well, what you are doing when you contact these sellers is certainly the right thing,Josh. The problem is that many times people are selling those masks high for a reason. They are looking to get that random buyer who has no knowledge of indie mask prices to jump right on it and buy at a ridiculous price. That is likely why most of the time they come off offended or tell you to take a walk. They know what they are doing,so when you point it out to them it angers them that someone knows they are playing games. If these people were sincere most of the time, then you contacting them would be a great help for sure.I am sure some people are unaware that they are pricing too high, but I would imagine the majority are just going fishing and hoping to make a fortune off of the mask or item. It’s a true shame and ebay is the perfect harbor for that kind of thing.

Once again Josh,I believe that what you were doing contacting them is the right thing to do.However,I wouldn’t blame you a bit if you stopped doing that, since it isn’t appreciated and is met with hostility.

Is this in reference to someone asking 1,500 dollars for a samhain mask? What a joke

IMO the sellers should do the research on their own before putting an item up for sale. If it’s a $100 mask and they list for $500… it will likely not sell and they’ll get the hint. If it’s a $2,000 mask and they’ve listed for $200 then it will likely get close to the true value - if not, someone gets a bargain and that’s the FUN of eBay!

Josh, we both put a lot of time and research into this hobby… moreso than you’re average collector. I always offer my mask knowledge to anyone who asks, but I never go out looking for random people on eBay to help out. That is unless I’m interested in a mask they’re selling and shoot them an offer. If I were you, I wouldn’t bother wasting time contacting them until you are interested in buying an item that looks to be overpriced.

=C=

I agree with Chad

I only ask what the name and maker are if they are not listed, because if they put that info in it can help the sale. I did try to help with someone that listed a mask as an H5 mask, but it looked to be an H1 mask like a Nemesis converted to an H4 (If I recall correctly).

someone should email the guy who list the 75 kirk over and over on ebay for ridiculous prices…

I Agree a 100% Sheriff, but Lets be realistic as far as the Gallery for Correct Mask pricing! I Disagree 100% Hear me, for example; I want to sell my 05 Psycho (Flawless) or my Psycho SE (Flawless) and I go by the pricing from the gallery, I’m gonna ask between 500-750 for the 05, and 750-1000 for the SE. Is this going to be a Fair asking Price on ebay after I’ve done my Research? NO! It will not sell at that Price. And I will be Looked at as a Guy Trying to make a Killing (like your talking about) but I 'm going by the Pricing Guide on MMN! :open_mouth: The Problem is EBAY! And thats why people Prosper selling their masks there. You see SOOOO many masks listed there by MMN members and those same Members do not list them in the Classifides because, the PATSY’S aren’t on here. Bottom line is if You looking to sell a mask and You want Gold for Silver, This is Achieveable on Ebay Unfortuately. I am SICKENED to see What some of these masks Sell for the EBay. , Thanks, Bob

I have mailed people to give them the right info for a mask but never to question their price. Most responses have been positive as I never stepped on their toes about money. As far as I am Concerned, sell it for what you want, if I like the price and the mask, I’ll buy it… If not I won’t. Like Anthony said, no one has a gun to my head and I research items before buying them.

Gotta agree Si, I have paid silly money for some of my masks and it was my choice.
It wasn’t because I didn’t know I could get the mask cheaper…because I did, it was because I saw a particular copy I really liked and being impatient did not want to wait.
It is annoying to see a mask you sold to someone go up for double the price, especially when you done them a deal in the firstplace and I have sold most masks the price I paid or even at a loss, but thats just the way it is.
Simply if someones got a mask up too high then its down to buyers out there NOT to push the button. Its all about choice.

The way people are these days, I would never waste my time. Not once. You can’t fix stupid, and ignorance is stupid’s really close cousin.

Six of one, half dozen of the other.
