I was fortunate enough to score this NAG 98 Proto Cast a while ago. For those not in-the-know, this mask is a direct recast of the DPS '98 proto Shatner, which, some say is a “laser scan” of an original mould. Personally, I don’t believe there was any “laser scan” involved for two reasons: What’s the need? DPS knew how to enlarge masks without such technology. And secondly, was this type of technology even around back then? I assume by “laser scan” we’re talking about some sort of early 3-D scanning and printed method. I don’t think the technology was there in '98. Even today it’s not easy to have something 3-D scanned and printed, nor cheap! I believe the '98 proto was an enlarge and reshape of that small foam filled Kirk blank that surfaced a while back. But I guess it’s a mystery.
I chose the small size, as I figured it is the closest possible thing to the real proto. The detail is crisp on this one! When I look at the 98 Proto Cast, I don’t see a mint Kirk. I see a vintage Kirk. So I tried to finish the mask to look authentically aged, as if it were nearly forty years old like the real Kirks out there. Warning, pic heavy! I tried to take many shots with different lighting to show the true look of the mask.
I hope you guys like it and thank you for looking!
That pull looks phenomenal and you’re paint complements it perfectly. I love that darker tone near the eyes and on parts of the neck. Looks like a nice thicker pull too! About what size is it? Thanks for sharing!
Wow! Thank you so much for the great feedback on this one, guys. I really appreciate all the comments.
Cheers, Chad! I’m glad what I was trying to achieve shows through.
Thanks! As I said in my initial post, these masks are no longer available.
Thank you, Matt! I believe it’s around 23". Nik told me it’s the same size as the 99 Shat blanks being sold. The pull thickness is about Nik’s usual thin/medium, but because it’s a smaller mask it acts more like a medium.
