After several days of trial and error I finally got the damn things to fade. At first I tried RIT color remover with little bleed and not much color change. Then bleach with no better result. I researched the topic of fire retardant chemicals in childtens clothes and camping tents. Apparently alot of people say these chemicals are a health hazard. Anyway an acid bath helps remove the chemicals and they suggested apple cider vinegar. I put them in the tub for about 3 hours with about 3 gallons of hot water and a gallon if ACV. The color bled pretty good. One other thing .I washed afterward with dish soap. As soap removes the chemicals over tine. This morning they were still too blue, so I bleached them again with much better results having removed enough of the chemicals to actually get to the dye. Swished them around for about 45 minutes. Then I read to rinse them out and soak them in water and hydrogen peroxide to neutralize the bleach. Took to the laundry and washed with dish soap again and stuck them in the drier. I was very pleased with the result. A grayish bluish tint and soft weathering. So if any of you guys aren’t happy with your Navy Blues you can fix the problem with a little patience. Pics below.
They look real good!
Thank you.
where did you find the coveralls. I’m having a hard time
Ebay. They were navy blue. A few vendors sell used ones. They remove the patches and name tags. I got mine for $30 free shipping.
Are yours used or new?
Do you know what weight these are? A read that these come in different weighted material.
Are these cotton?
9.5 oz. They were new. What size are you looking for?
Sorry to bump an old thread. You went with the Navy pair Im thinking about the same.
The weathering turned out great I just wanted to tell you if your interested.
At my local fabric store I saw Rit has a liquid dye now in Charcoal grey, the bottle looks just like the movie coveralls color!
I think I might do the same I found a cheap navy pair and try the cider vinagar and charcoal dye.
when you said “you bleached them again” did you actually use bleach or ACV again?
He used bleach again. Before the vinegar bath the bleach had no fading effect.
You only use the vinegar once initially to remove the fire retardant
Sorry to pop up a very old post but I’m trying to fade my navy Workrites but I can’t get these things to budge. I’ve left them in ACV and hot water mixture for hours 3 different times. I’ve bleached them after the fact multiple times and I’m always running them through a cycle of dish washing detergent afterwards. I even tried white vinegar and then bleached them again and they have just barely faded, I can barely tell a difference. I’ve read through every thread I could find on this subject and haven’t had anywhere near the results I’m looking for like others have achieved. Am I missing something or is there any other tips anyone could me? Thanks
Bumping this for advice if anyone cares to share…
