I was fortunate enough to pick up a 1986 Don Post recently, and just snapped a few quick pictures.
This mask will always hold a special place in my heart, the 1986 was my first Myers mask, and I still think its one of the best as far as vintage-awesome-masky-amazingness goes!
I’ve owned loads of these over the years, some are better than others, but I think everyone will agree, it’s probably the best sculpt that DP ever did as far as Myers goes. The newer versions of this mask never quite ‘had it’.
Great copy bro! This was my first Myers mask as well (the 85 or 86 one at least) and it does hold a lot of nostalgic value. It also remains the best sculpt DP did for a Myers, just as you said. Congrats man!
A great mask. Neil Surges, who is still an active artist doing model kit work if I remember correctly, sculpted this mask for DPS first released as the flesh colored 1985 The Mask. As most know he was given a Kirk foam master and told to replicate it. I think he did a great job. The flesh colored versions were only produced for a year when the paint scheme was changed to white. The same sculpt was subsequently retooled for 1986 and on until newer The Mask sculpts were completed during the 90s. Nice purchase. Hold on to him as these are becoming harder to find and even harder to find one without some wear and tear.
Thanks for all the replies, I’m very happy with this mask and it brings back lots of awesome memories too. I once wore one of these for 9 hours solid at a Halloween event for work. I wouldn’t recommend that to anyone though!! I just love the white, blank look of these masks.
Great info, thanks for sharing. I’d love to see JC rework a nice copy of the 1985, to show how good Neil’s sculpt is compared to masks even of today’s standards. It’s a shame the mask was retooled so much over the years, as with each newer version, it lost a bit more charm. Thanks again.
Thanks again, guys. I’m very happy to own this. I remember people almost mocking/laughing at these several years ago when everyone had one. I guess most have melted away, but now I certainly think they’re becoming rare little gems.
Fantastic, I love that mask, thanks for sharing. I think I missed that thread somehow! Great stuff.
