I think you’ve misread or misunderstood Carpenter’s comments. He considers Myers’s a “force of nature,” not a person. This is in light of his criticisms of RZ’s movies demystifying Myers by making him just another serial killer.
The original Halloween had it right by ramping up the supposed kill shot each time only for the Shape to rise from it making people think “Just how do you kill this guy?” and then the end leaves all doubt and says “You don’t”. Tough to do that after so many films.
If they use that approach and save the damage for late in the film and ramp it up to a final revelation, that would work. You have to give the audience a temptation of being able to survive and end the threat. Carpenter did this best. Halloween (The Shape is gone), The Fog (Blake and crew comes back for the priest), The Thing " Why don’t we just wait here for a little while… see what happens?"), Prince of Darkness (final dream and mirror scene), In the Mouth of Madness (after Trent is deemed crazy and the entire events of the film are in doubt, he wakes up to an abandoned asylum and the broadcast of the world overrun by the apocalypse), they all gave the audience and the characters a sense of hope they could stop the threat until the final moments where there is doubt.
Sorry for just now following up. I’m typing the quote. I got it from Halloween Daily News. It’s buried in their section called “Everything we know on Halloween 2018” or something like that. Here ya go…
“I feel the thing to do with Michael Myers is exactly what Green and McBride are attempting to do. And that is to take the Boogeyman back to the way he was intended in the 1978 original. Just an escaped mental patient in a mask stalking a 17-year-old girl for no apparent reason other than she was at the wrong place at the wrong time. The only “supernatural” elements to the original film are confined to the rantings of Dr. Loomis, and of course, that final scene when Myers disappears after being shot six times and falling off the Doyle house balcony.”
On a side note, if any of you are local to the Atlanta area, I’m in town with some friends for the national championship game Monday night. Anyone on here wants to link up with us for some beers and chow, give me a shout.
Eeeeasy killer…I never said anything in my posts denying the famous “force of nature” description from Carpenter. I’m as familiar with it as any other fan. There’s a lot of “figuratively speaking” that goes along with that. Everything I’m discussing involves the upcoming flick, what I’ve read, and opinion straight from the man himself. Got to meet him at an expo almost five years ago in Vegas, and he was nice enough to give me and my girl a few minutes of conversation during and after signing my day bill/lobby poster from the H2 release.
As far as the demystifying of Myers goes, he’s speaking to the mistake of Zombie’s “origin” story and giving the audience a peek behind the proverbial curtain that is Michael’s childhood/past.
I see. I would argue that there are supernatural elements sprinkled throughout the movie, not just at the finale/climax. Michael often disappearing in a blink, heck lifting Bob all the way off his feet with one arm, etc…
Michael is a force of nature, the embodiment of irresistible fate and untimely death for Laurie Strode and her friends. There’s nothing that says he has to be able to walk through walls or walk through a volley of gunfire, but like the original film there should be hints at something inhuman.
I think this is good discussion. Could be worse, we could be arguing over whether he should be wearing olivewood or charcoal coveralls in the new film, hahaha.
Carpenter was briefly involved in the early stages of the production for Halloween 4. He and Hill had the idea that Haddonfield has repressed all things Halloween in light of The Night He Came Home. It’s 10 years later and that repression had led to the return of The Shape. I have a feeling Carpenter’s involvement in H18 may mean his H4 ideas are being used somewhat. So The Shape has returned, but wasn’t necessarily in hiding anywhere. He may have just disappeared after falling from the balcony. Carpenter’s idea for H4 was that he was a spirit, a supernatural force. Here’s more on the H4 we didn’t get, unfortunately. http://halloweendailynews.com/2017/01/original-halloween-4-script/
