I haven’t personally used them, but I have been to Motion Picture FX in person and have bought Mabry’s mask latex which is awesome stuff, so I imagine that they would be of the same excellent quality.
I prefer to make my own acrylic/latex paint. I do so because of the many different colors that are available to choose from. Also most of the colors are available in satin, matte, and gloss. I’ve used Monster Makers mask paint and while it is good stuff, I get the same if not better results from making my own paint. Its really all personal preference though.
I’ve made my own, used monster makers and used night shades. At the end of the day, I prefer the night shades from motion picture FX. It has worked better more consistently than the other options. For me anyway.
I’m currently using Mabry’s Monsters latex which is currently available in just natural, to mix my acrylics with. I prefer to use just natural latex instead of buying it colored. Craft acrylic works fine. If you spend a few extra dollars and get some artist quality acrylics at Hobby Lobby, the better your mix will be.
yes, they are good. They have a different sheen than most any paints I have used, they looks like a real professional mask, and not a , well, an armature mask. You can mix them to make whatever color you want. You can dilute them with water… It is a matter of people just wanting to be cheap… you get what you pay for.
Side note… Chris Nelson uses night shades on the movie masks.
So I actually buy and use both the Monster Makers as well as the Nightshades… I’ve never mixed my own from scratch, I think you save money up front when you look at Monster Makers pricing, however, I’d say their paints come much more diluted with distilled water than the Nightshades. It’s almost as if the Nightshade paints are “from concentrate” meaning I wouldn’t dilute the 4oz bottle of White from Monster Makers as it’s already fairly running. But I would most definitely add a decent amount of distilled water to the same sized bottle of Nighsthade… To me, this means that even if theres a fraction of an increase in pricing between the brands, the Nightshades technically feels like more for my money as if I diluted the 4oz bottle of Nightshade to the same consistency as the Monster Makers, it would nearly double to 8oz (i’m not sure if it made sense when explaining, I havent had my coffee yet) So far I’m a bigger fan of the quality of the Nightshades. And as far as the question about the flesh tone on the neck. I once heard someone describe the flesh tone on the original Kirks to be that kind of 1970s “GI Joe” Tan… So I take the Dark flesh and add a few drops of red and a drop of yellow to sort of tan up the color.
