I will say they were better than all of the sequels after Halloween II (1981) and the Zombie movies. However, they still kind of missed the mark. The mask was a major improvement, so just seeing that on the screen made for a better experience than all of the aforementioned films. They needed a better story to justify bringing the Shape back. Focusing on Laurie and her trauma just didn’t cut it, pun intended.
I was hoping that Halloween 2018 would have been a better option than Halloween II (1981) to watch every October but it isn’t. The hype around that movie was insane! Probably why I was so let down with the end result.
Kills was okay, some well shot scenes and the flashback scenes were interesting. Ends had a lot of potential had the script been better.
They were bad, I wish they weren’t but they were. Any good will they created due to hype and demand around the time they were made will evaporate further with time as people revisit the films with a more critical eye. It’s happened with H:20 where people became more critical with time when it was once hailed as the best sequel by a lot of people.
Tonally all over the place, poorly written and thought out, direction no better than the weaker sequels, no real meat on their bones as everything about them was pretty up front and overt (an issue with a lot of movies in the past ten years or so), and worst of all they never understood the original film-which is why we got what we got.
I don’t think a lot of people will admit that the Blumhouse trilogy is closer to Halloween V or Resurrection than anything else in the series (even more so than Rob Zombie’s films). Same tonal whiplashes and out of place comedy, same issues with writing/re-writes, characters that don’t feel or act like real people, similar inability of those in charge to understand the original film and The Shape as a character. At least V was one film and had the Halloween feel in a decent enough amount of it, and Resurrection is looked at as a “so bad it’s good” film a bit more these days since people can separate it from the original film as there’s a real lack of seriousness to it (too goofy to take seriously); with the Blumhouse trilogy it’s like they were trying to make more serious films but didn’t know how to so it’s more difficult to take them in as a whole.
For instance Halloween V could have the dumb Tina and friends or clown cops moments but another chunk of the film would be devoid of that and pretty atmospheric. You could edit the film to be at least a lot more presentable though not ideal as some things just can’t be edited out. With the Blumhouse films you can’t really edit down all the bad aspects since they are so ingrained and ever present, especially with Kills and Ends, and a lot of those bad moments are part of the actual ongoing plot and not just a dumb scene or two. The Blumhouse films are closer to the Halloween series’ Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Next Generation without something like the awesome over the top McConauhey performance and running nearly six hours long.
I’m going to write this for the milionth time, I wrote it at other forums as well, but perhaps we’ve had enough of a man in a white mask with knife in his hand. Next thing that is made should take a totally different perspective. Focus on Michael’s childhood, his stay at the psychiatric ward, etc.
…but that still doesn’t change what I wrote earlier. I would rewatch the last three Halloweens if there is absolutely nothing else to do at that moment. But next time a movie called Halloween with a knife-wielding maniac is announced, I would probably just shake my head in disbelief.
I wish Michael wasn’t some killing machine. I wish it was way more grounded and that he was average height. Michael is 5’10"-5’11" not 6ft+ Even JC said believed that.
Would have better if he was not just in Haddonfield, he should have been a roaming serial killer. The End of 78 heavily implied that he could be anywhere when he escaped. But nope he was just caught the same night. If they were going to make the movie too I’d say to leave Laurie out of it. She was a random victim that he targeted that night. He should be stalking and targeting others by now. And the best part of the movies was the timeskip so maybe if it was all a period piece that could have been cool.
