Origin/definition of "hero" mask

Apologies if this has been discussed previously. I did do a few searches and really only could find various topics about each movie’s hero…etc.

I just wanted to see if I have this right and if so, where it originated.

My understanding is that a “hero” mask is the actual mask that is used in the filming of a movie, and that it could be any movie, horror or otherwise. Basically the prop used by a character in a movie?

Is this correct? Or does it have to be the main character as in Jason or Michael? And again, where did this term originate from? Halloween (1978)?

The term “Hero” goes back to the silent films because the handsome Hero got all the close up shots in a film. Now it is used to describe a mask/prop that is meant for closeups. This means more detail and better paint than a background or stunt mask/prop.

I had no idea that’s where it originated from. Thanks for the post!

ive always wondered that myself! thanks for asking a question a third of us probably wanted to!

I never knew that, So cool. :supz:

Count me in as another who says, “thanks for sharing”!
