I think I made a post like this before, but I can’t remember but does anyone know what exactly was the hair on both the H6 hero mask AND the TOTS original run H6? I heard the TOTS OG H6 was movie accurate hair but how true is that?? Does anyone actually know?
The movie hair, at least from what I’ve always read, is a synthetic hair of some type. You can get a really good look at it in the photos I attached here.
The original ToTs H6 hair was by far the best and was also synthetic, but it was pretty whispy a little too dark. Still prefer it over the current hair though.
That DOES help! I also thought the synthetic hair on the OG TOTS wasn’t as “full” compared to the hero, but it was still really great. It also was applied kind of like a glued on rug too, not unlike the worse hair on the TOTS 6 now. Is that how it was on the original mask too do you think?
I’ve always had a feeling the mask that Wilbur wore differed a bit from the masks used in reshoots with Lerner and Hardin. Same mold, of course, but the thickness of the pulls, finish work, and hairing are pretty noticeably different.
I feel the earlier mask(s) made for Wilbur featured longer, hand laid hair. While the ones used in the reshoots had something more synthetic, as stated above. Whether the synthetic hair was laid in rows or more of a “fur” netting that was glued down is hard to say. But there’s certainly a noticeable difference in color, texture, and application on the masks pulled later in production.
I almost feel as though the sculpture of the H6 lends itself best to when Lerner is wearing the mask. To me, that’s when it appears the most like the H4 cover- which was used as inspiration. It leads me to think that the mask was sculpted on a generic head form and didn’t quite fit Wilbur great, as it looks just a bit bloated when he was behind the mask. Funny, I actually really like the look Wilbur pulled off behind the mask, even if he distorted the shape quite a bit. Ultimately, though, I think Lerner looked the best behind the mask.
Another detail that I feel we haven’t really gotten right on replicas is the hair. More particularly, the trimming/styling of the hair. On the mask(s) I mentioned above, the ones created early on for Wilbur to wear pre-reshoots, the hair has almost a flat-top thing going on in the front. You’ll notice the hair seems to be a just a bit shorter in the front/on top than it is around the sides and back of the mask. It’s almost like the first row of hair sticks straight up in the front/top. This gives the mask a very distinct look. Almost all replicas feature hair that’s the same length all around. Many of which are far too long on top and the hairline comes backward, which is more common on the prior masks from the series. The H6 hairline is also fairly unique, in that it protrudes outward towards the center of the hairline/forehead and recedes back a bit around the temples. Almost more like a natural human hairline.
I’ve obviously thought about this quite a bit lol, but the H6 has always been my favorite mask of the series outside of the original. I can confidently say it’s definitely my favorite mask of all the sculptures that were specifically created for their respective films. So not having a replica that’s been just right has left me with a bit of an empty void on my H6 heart.
Hang on, wait. I hardcore agree with this. I just assumed the hair on the reshoot mask was just damaged due to the acetone baths, but now you have me second guessing that LMAO
Crepe hair was used for my rehaul and it got the job done but obvs it’s not a match at all, especially to the hero. I wonder if synthetic hair from a beauty store i checked out may be the right course for accuracy…?
Comes from Amazon. I just looked up sheet fur and ordered some cheap stuff. You have to make a wig pattern and apply it in a very different way than normal hairing. Hard to explain via text.
