Our new swearing/profanity policy

A handful of members unfortunately were banned recently due to excessive profanity and disrespect both here on the forum and on facebook. I’ve been trying to wrap my head around this, as I see this problem as something that has really distracted from why we are here.

I have listened to both sides of this and decided on the following:

  • I have installed a ‘profanity filter’ on the forum. What this does is censor some of the most major words that some members don’t wish to be seeing a lot of. For instance, instead of seeing the F-bomb, you’ll now see “f***.” This is very similar to how other boards deal with this problem, including Nightowl. If you try to get around the filter, and add spaces or dashes to still allow the word to display, you will get a warning or ban if it keeps up.

  • If you don’t mind profane words here and there, and wouldn’t mind seeing them, you can actually turn this filter off in your user control panel. To turn the filter off, go to the “user control panel” link near the top of this page, once there, click on the ‘board preferences’ tab. Then on the left side, there should be a display options tab, in there you will find the ability to turn off the word censoring.

  • Adding some of these words in your posts are going to happen once in awhile, and that’s fine - we understand people are going to use it. Just don’t use it excessively. We now have options for people who don’t want to see it and also for people who don’t mind seeing it.

If a word gets through that I did not add to the list of censored words, please PM me if you notice it and I will add it to the list. Thanks.

Lets get back to Myers!

Great idea!

Good deal…Personally i don’t see why anyone would need to use it/them at all really…There are are a heck of a lot of words in the English language but this set up is a good one & much better than nothing at all.

excellent idea…there is no need for profanity

It’s a shame that people feel they need to use filthy language to express themselves on this board. When I see excessive profanity in typed form I do not understand it at all. There is a time and place for everything and when you type words to be displayed on this board or anywhere online, you are actually CHOOSING to use those particular words. That means that you actually are choosing to be viewed by people as a person with no regard for conducting themselves properly publicly. It’s actually sad and sickening.Unfortunately, and not to single any group out,it is often the younger members.I think that they think that it is okay to act the way they do with their friends after class here on this board.I personally hate seeing a post loaded with profanity. It distracts from the point of the thread or that particular post.

A lot of us in our personal lives can use some colorful language.I can have a mouth like a truck driver if I am upset, shocked or passionate about something. There is a time and place for that.I don’t believe anyone should choose to be perceived by others as someone with a lack of intelligence that must rely on distasteful language to get a point across.

I think what you have done,Derek,is a great idea.If a person uses one colorful term to express himself to show passion in his words,it doesn’t leap off of the page. When it is over the top,it is a different story.I do not mind the occasional word peppered into a phrase to show excitement, but certain words, especially “the F-Bomb” have no place at all here.No place whatsoever.

Derek, great job on finding a really solid way to handle the issue.

This is great Derek and im all in favour of it,as mentioned previously the Excessive use of profane language is unnecessary and there are many alternative words that can be used to get your point across in exactly the same way but also shows you have reserve and are showing respect toward other members and the site which in turn people will have a great deal of respect for you, sure now and then it can slip out with excitement which even i can understand but on the whole keeping it clean is by far the best way to conduct yourself in public forums. :drinkers:

Anyways, I think its just the younger group of people here. Personally I just use the word hell here, I dont think Ive ever dropped the F-bomb on this forum, and I dont really plan on it either :stuck_out_tongue:
