Outgrew Superstition?

I’m having touble understanding the line from the original Halloween, the one where Laurie says, “Well kiddo, I thought you outgrew superstition.”

What exactly is she talking about when she says this?

Superstition is believing in something based on faith rather than evidence. As a kid you might believe in Santa, the tooth fairy, or as in the movie, the boogeyman. As you grow older you learn otherwise through experience, hence you outgrow it.

Not even Debra Hill knew what that line meant. She said John just threw it in and she just went along with it cuz it seemed to work.

I think the line is referring to the fact that she was getting spooked by the shape when she was walking home. And then as she returns home seeing kids in costumes she tries to dismiss being spooked by the shape as superstition.

From Wikipedia…

Superstition is a pejorative term for any belief or practice that is considered irrational: for example, if it arises from ignorance, a misunderstanding of science or causality, a positive belief in fate or magic, or fear of that which is unknown.

So, all that day, Laurie saw stuff…but thought it was irrational of herself to think it or see it or believe she saw something.

Lol this thread is 9 years old

I’m sure the OP knows the meaning of superstition. lol

I think he is referring to what her meaning of it is…

Superstition isnt the same as faith. Because you can have faith in something that’s rational or faith the mail will come on time, or faith that your car will start in the morning. Etc, etc

I have always wondered what Laurie meant by that and I believe “Masuhwik” nailed it with his reply above.

I’ve always thought it was because of the stuff that Tommy told her at the beginning of the movie when he walked up to the Myers house with her (“you can’t go up there”…“It’s a spook house”) combined with starting to believe that her thoughts of someone stalking her (Myers) was just in her mind. When she saw Myers behind the hedge Annie made fun of her and showed her no one was there. When she saw Myers looking up at her from the sheets she got a heavy breathing call only to find out it was just Annie. All this made her feel foolish so seeing the kids Trick or Treating after she nervously bumped into Sheriff Brackett and what he said (“It’s Halloween…I guess everyone is entitled to one good scare”) probably cemented the idea she was being foolish and superstitious. The Trick or Treaters in their costumes celebrating the spooky holiday just brought it all together in her mind.

Lol, I just caught that. Major BUMP
