Paint sealer HELP!

I recently ordered matte finish sealer from FX Warehouse to seal the rehauls I’ve been doing. However, it’s pretty glossy. Not as much as the actual gloss sealer, but still pretty glossy. To me, “matte” should mean totally flat as if nothing is there.

Is there any product someone could recommend to seal paint on masks that is totally flat?

Thanks in advance

I’ll be doing mine also. What brand did you use? I’ll be using Liquitex brand. I was advised by one artist to use satin finish and another artist recommended matte finish, so I am going with the matte. Hopefully doesn’t turn out glossy.
Cheers

I think I’ll be trying Liquitex on the next one. The one I bought is a milky white liquid literally called “Flexible waterproof sealer” and I got it from fxwarehouse.com.

Plastic Dip, will seal the paint and wont dry glossy.

I used the Liquitex stuff through my airbrush. Initially it seemed glossy but it dried to a nice matte.

I think I’ll try that. Thank you!

What specific Liquitex is this your talking about?

https://www.ebay.ie/itm/401339754124 or this https://www.ebay.ie/itm/311880111716 but Plasti-dip is good too.

Is there a big difference in the matte medium and the varnish?

The varnish protects against uv light.

Awesome thanks

Since we’re on the subject, is there any feasible way to un-gloss a sealer once on a mask? I’m guessing probably not. I just had pull this last mask off Ebay because I thought it would be a good idea to seal it after I already had pictures up. Good thing it was a buy-it-now and not an auction. Now I’m most likely going to keep it… its so glossy I dont think I’ll be able to sell it. It’s a shame too, because I think I nailed the paint and weathering.

Get some dulling spray or dust it lightly with baby powder to take the sheen away.

Okay cool. Thanks for the help man. It’s amazing how much help this board is. I remember being a teenager back in the 90s and early 2000s you couldn’t even find a Myers mask that looked remotely accurate, let alone information on how to do it yourself. Now we have the ability to buy masks that are pieces of art and figure out the process without leaving a chair. Not to sound like an old man… but it’s pretty awesome.

I use Water-Based polyurethane varnish for my masks, seals them really well and has a great finish. Never had any problems.
I prefer Satin myself, but Matte is equally as good In my opinion.

Since everybody has given great advice, it made me realize I think out of 8 masks I’ve had from AHG, only 2 appeared sealed. I love his style but I am almost certain the paint wasn’t sealed, or at least it looked like it wasn’t. Like almost any mask you come across will become “shiny” if you put a flashlight on it in pitch black, but his masks never did. Cracking paint on the nose and certain areas. Odd but it kind of added onto the overall rawness of the masks. They never got any worse over the years, just something this topic made me think about.

That’s very interesting. I’ve owned a few AHG masks over the Years and never really noticed that.

This is what I was left with after using the supposed matte sealer from FX Warehouse. The gloss version must be pretty damn glossy to say the least. I would feel sick if it wasnt just a TOTS H2. I have the Liquitex matte varnish now so all is good

First pic doesn’t look too glossy. second pic is more noticeable. Lucky it wasn’t a high end piece. Let us know how the liquitex turns out as I’ll be sealing my H40 mask soon

You don’t really need to seal anything so long as you are using latex mixed paint. My old HSS wasn’t sealed. I like to work with acrylic ink on my 40s and H2s and that does need to be sealed. But no harm doing it. Just be sure to go lightly. You’ll get that shiny look if it goes on too heavily, even with matte.
