Post your thoughts on Halloween 2018

I figured I would start a fresh new thread, discussing your thoughts, and maybe if you could give a small review after viewing this film.

I just got back from seeing it . I need to let this marinate a bit. Have to sit down , relax and really process what I just saw. But here are some quick pros and cons.
Cons-
-Hated the new Loomis character.

  • They showed the Shape too much
  • I really disliked the humor.

Pros-

  • I really liked James Jude Courtney. Total H2 Warlock status
  • The Score was brilliant
  • Jamie Lee Curtis performance was top notch .

I’m going to see this again tomorrow with a group of friends. I think after sleeping on this, and viewing this film again, I’ll get a true sense on how I feel about this movie.

Now I will say this. This movie is nowhere near H1 and H2, but far superior than the dumb Thorn trilogy, H20, Resurrection and Rob Zombie’s Cluster F—.

Certainly my favourite sequel right behind the original.
They definitely hit all the notes I wanted to see in a Halloween movie especially how ruthless Michael is and the random killings without a motivation. It’s absolutely a treasure and makes me extremely happy as a fan of the franchise. The mask, the score, the portrayal of Michael, the kills, it feels like a true return of The Shape and not the Michael of the RZ films. It definitely sits in my top 3 films in the franchise (H1, H40, H4).

It was okay. There were a few things in it which I didn’t like. The ending being one

I’ll have to see it a second time to give a critical review, but I’ll say this. I was very pleased but had one problem with it. The lack of Laurie’s theme.

Yeah the ending sucked. Before I get ahead of myself, I was anticipating this feature as much as anyone else. They captured the look of autumn masterfully.
After seeing the movie,

I like the new mask much more.
Too much exposure of JJC without the mask.
No silhouettes of “the shape”.
Creep factor toned down way too low.
The score and Lauries theme was tragically underused. So much more could have been done with this based on the resources available.
The doctor character was a big WTF!
The doc crew completely unnecessary and deserved a re-write.
Sherriff’s involvement too subtle and vague.
JLC slam dunk performance, no sweat. The entire movie should have been treated this way. Hard to screw it up.
Nice bit of child humor.
Michael not vicious or violent enough.
JJC had a spectacular performance. Perfect stature, movement, expression. Can’t fault him for the way it was shot.
I agree that the shape was exposed way too much. Too many long and wide shots.
Did I say the iconic score was tragically underused? It was the lynch pin in the original to bring all the elements together.
Lauries family was a disappointment.
Yes the insane asylum was ineptly depicted. Checkerboard yard? No way other patients are put anywhere near a killing machine.
How was he not in isolation?
Touched on Loomis, I wanted more background since they discussed it.
Opening to movie…a disappointment.
Overall, if a fan of Michael, that is the only reason to see this. All the other characters of course except JLC disappear.

I liked it. There was one character I could completely go without but it was good. The couple of minutes when Allyson escapes the police car and is beating on the doors of houses and the music sounds really awesome is when I really felt like I was watching a Halloween movie

I haven’t read any spoilers yet but man… Sure hope they didn’t feel the need to give him a trashy backstory Hugo! Lol

I’ll go on records saying that I very much enjoyed this movie and its brutality. Was it perfect? Of course not, it’s a Halloween movie. Was it a worthy sequel? My personal opinion is, yes. JJC is spectacular as the Shape. All of the actors gave a fine performance. I will definitely watch it again in the theater and look forward to owning it. So good to see Michael Myers back in action in a movie that is genuinely enjoyable. The ending doesn’t bother me. My only minor gripes are the new doctor and the use of the soundtrack. The doctor’s sub-plot felt weak and unnecessary, and frankly was something that belonged in part 5 or part 6. The score was great, but wasn’t used enough to generate edge of your seat suspense. Still, on the top of my sequel list next to H2. IMHO.

The mask looks very good on screen. At times, in shadows, it looks a lot like H2. I loved how the camera follows Michael, had a good H1 feel. Back to him blending in on Halloween night and anyone could die, not knowing the evil was right next to them. I like the nods they gave to H1 throughout the film. The comedy was good but felt weird in a Halloween movie. The ending was not good, did not like it at all. Overall it was a great movie though.

my biggest regret…

…the one I feel so bad about…

…is not getting a better look at the hot costumed nurse who was getting into the car.

DamnYouFine

Here’s my pros and cons
-You can tell Carpenter had his hands all over this
-The Mask and JJC’s performance is mwah almost perfect compared to 1978
-Cinematography
-The Gore and kills (Mike killing a kid really gave it another level)
-The Music
-Some of the humor, especially the little kid
-The suspense (This was the first movie besides Toy Story 3, don’t judge me haha, that I felt real emotion, happiness, fear etc.)
-Jamie Freaking Lee Curtis felt really human and emotional in this
-Opening Credits
-Dr. Loomis cameo

Cons:
-The writing. (Seemed to really rely on coincidenctal accidents)
-THAT DOCTOR SUBPLOT
-Not enough creative kills for my taste

So, yeah, it was really good/fun, but could’ve been tweaked just slighty. 7.5-8/10

I loved this movie, acting was spot on to what I wanted to see, JJC killed it. Score was phenomenal, “The Shape hunts Allison”…just wow. My only gripes are the Sartain character, the film didn’t need him in my opinion, more especially his scenes after the bus crash, he should’ve died then. Also a specific deleted scene I wish they kept in, the one showing the podcasters were a couple. I believe the bathroom scene was filmed with the intention of having the audience see that Michael didn’t finish off her boyfriend,(looked to me like he was still alive) giving him reason to be in a sequel.

Was my favorite next to the original. Felt everything was done right, liked the deaths, had moments I wanted to see in the series for awhile, and contrary to a lot of people, I liked the doctor story, it reminded me of the old universal monster movies where there’s the one obsessed doctor that wants to see the monster at its full potential

Yeah I liked it too, I’m really glad they didnt try to do a Loomis ripoff. I just wish sartain’s death was a bit better, other than that I liked the character and the whole “feel what hes feeling” kinda thing

Here are my thoughts after a few months:

-the mask, JLC’s performance, and the score are the best things about the movie
-the movie wasted too much time on secondary characters instead of focusing on Laurie, her family, and The Shape
-Michael should have broken out on his own when he learned he was being moved from Smiths’ Grove. Having Sartain engineer everything robbed The Shape of his mystery
-Sartain is an awful and unnecessary character and stock villain (even had a mustache to twirl!)
-Michael was more Voorhees in this film, without the stalking we know and love. He should have fixated on someone as in the original film (perhaps Laurie’s daughter or granddaughter) and Laurie had to protect them. Instead, The Shape is directed toward Laurie by Sartain which is contrived and cheap
-The main male characters in the film are killed off for no good reason other than the very strong “women’s power” theme of the film. Anytime a theme is forced, it overtakes the story and becomes propaganda. Laurie was already a strong woman.
-Most frustrating of all, we were told by the creators that this movie is “about trauma,” yet the other two characters who were traumatized, Tommy and Lindsay, weren’t even mentioned. I guess kids being traumatized isn’t as bad as a woman being traumatized.

Overall: there was the germ of a great sequel in this move that was ultimately missed because of useless characters, contrivances, and poor editing and writing. Green said they literally went through 80 drafts (when the interviewer laughed at this, he said he wasn’t exaggerating). That level of confusion and uncertainty at the writing stage can only lead to a mess of a movie. I rank H18 just below H20, which is the only sequel I still feel has any merit. At the end of the day, the best sequel to the original film is no sequel at all, IMO.

Great review man. I think this film was good, but could of been great !. with some tweaks. Remove Sartain and the comedy, more stalking and less Jason like kills, and we have ourselves a great movie. I also felt they showed the Shape more that I wanted to see, plus the trailers revealed too much. Even the score sometimes felt misplaced with certain scenes. When Michael returns to Haddonfield, bumps into those kids and starts his rampage, instead of using the " Michael Kills again" which is pretty much the Halloween theme, they should of used " the Shape returns". I think it would of worked better with that scene, and made it more sadistic. But overall I dig this film, and ranked this behind H78 and H81.

I think they should have used NO music after he bumps into the kids. No music sometimes ratchets up the tension. Like the whole beginning of Halloween 2, prior and during the Elrond scene.

I love the movie. The only one after the original and H2, that I love. I have seen it many times now and the mask is brilliant. Michael is played beautifully and the story is sustainable. Not perfect, but only the original will ever approach that status imo.

I really liked it. I saw it opening night. Music was perfect, so much so that I bought the soundtrack. Jamie and James did a great job. Really like the scene with Michael passing over the baby and I was surprised that he was going to entertain the idea of leaving that kid with him in the car but, he killed him when saw him act up. Thank God hahaha There was a lot of really good nostalgia in the movie. I thought the camera angles and lighting was just right. My only concern is with Michael’s hand being mostly blown off and that he had all of his old war wounds from H1, a missing left hand is a devastating loss. If hes missing his left last two fingers that is going to greatly diminish his grip strength to the point that he’s going to have a difficult time even opening doors or grasping anything. When I saw that I immediately got very upset hahaha sorry. Me personally I think that you would have thought cool ifthe shrapnel blew a big hole in the center of his hand for the light all go through, and if Michael happened to survive it would look like a seared hole in his hand. There’s no prosthetic he could possibly get that I could handle the strength that he needs and I doubt he’d wear it. Unless he got some type of reattachment surgery and I doubt anyone would allow him to get that because they’re thinking leaving him the way he is will slow him down. I’m just figuring if his eye was left in paired, they’re going to leave his left hand impaired also and I have no clue how they’re going to move forward from this point.

But if he needs a prosthetist you tell him I’ve got all my certifications and I’ll be here:jack_o_lantern::heart::jack_o_lantern:

I was very happy that Michael is shown a lot. He’s similar to the Rob Zombie Myers which I really liked. It was paced well and it was an awesome sequel to H1. I personally like it over H2. Overall great movie.
