Hello friends, after a long time I finally bit the bullet and ordered liquid latex, liquitex white and pink to rehaul my boogeyman.
Thing is, I read that the glossy surface it has will make it a pain to let the latex/acrylix mix adhere, what can I do to prep it?
I don’t have naphta or acetone at home, I only have denaturated 90% alchohol (not isopropyl), would rubbing a bit of it all over the mask, cleaning it with water and then letting it dry work?
As for the painting technique, since I don’t have an airbrush, I am planning to lay down circular patches of the latex/paint mix (thinned with a bit of water) with a cheap brush and then rub it thin on the mask with a towel till I got the whole surface covered, if it matters.
Rubbing alcohol will remove enough of the sealant to allow the paint to bind. I don’t know about denatured alcohol - I’ve never used it. However, with respect to this painting method you described, do not do this. You will end up with an unworkable mess of latex all over your mask. If you are not going to use an airbrush, use squares of cut up car wash sponge and allow each layer of paint to dry completely before applying a second coat, to prevent latex boogers. Also, change your sponge regularly.
Oh looking around it seems rubbing alcohol and denaturated basically mean the same thing so it should be fine then.
Yeah I just had the chance to test that on a cheap rotting mask I had and I can see what you mean, the method I regularly use for acrylic only paint does not work, I got a messy layer of streaky paint with the boogers as you call them
I will give it a try on the same test mask with the sponge method like you said in the next few days, and if I feel confident about it I will proceed to do it on the boogeyman.
I painted using a sponge over the messed up latex layer I had painted before (the one with the streak and the lumps of latex) and the result was already much better, I’m getting the hang of it. In the next few days I will flip this mask over and use the sponge method on the unpainted surface and see what I can do, If I deem it good enough I will proceed with this technique on the boogeyman.
One thing I’m really happy about though is the weathering, granted, I did go a little overboard on this mask cause I really wanted to see what I could do, but i’m particularly happy with the fading pink on the bottom and the grey/brown wash mix, I’ve almost cracked the code, if I manage to get a decent technique for the base layer, detailing will be a breeze.
