This may qualify as shameless self-promotion but I have been wanting to do a video like this for a very long time and while it doesn’t have the best timing there is an explanation for that. Anywho, I’m posting this with the hope of reinvigorating my YT channel a bit, as well as add some conversation for the forum; perhaps people can offer their own lists and debate about them as I figure my choices will be pretty different for them. It’s a long video but it is also very descriptive so if you love the films enough to listen to me yammer on about them for an extended amount of time I hope you’ll check out the video. There’s a few flubs, but what the hell; I spent long enough working on it. Thanks! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6e7oeuHiHE
Excellent video man, well done! Here is my ranking of the series:
10: RZ H2
9: H6
8: RZ H1
7: Resurrection
6: H20
5: H3
4: H5
3: H4
2: H2 (1981)
1: H1 (1978)
I have to agree with you on the darkness of H1 (1978). When I recently rewatched it, I could feel the threat of Michael, the danger he presented to this small town, all due to Dr Loomis’ amazing lines, combined with the excellent lighting and music. I also see what you mean about how H2 (1981) somehow feels slightly darker than H1. I always noticed that. I think it had to do with the creepy synth music, along with Dr Loomis talking about samhain, and the darkness inside ourselves, as you pointed out. I love all that great stuff. You might be surprised to see me listing H5 so highly of my list, but let me explain that. I completely agree that it is a terrible movie, no question. But to me, it’s the last movie in the series that felt semi-connected to the original, plus being so similar to H4 helps too. And finally, it’s comes down to pure nostalgia for me. I grew up watching it every year at Halloween, so that’s certainly part of the reason. To wrap things up, I really enjoyed your video, thanks for posting!
Damn that was a long video Nah pretty cool!
I"ll go from 1-10 in that order. Favorite too Awful.
1.Halloween 1978 (The Gone With The Wind of the Horror movies)
2. Halloween 2. Damn good sequel, i really love it.
3.Halloween 4. The Halloween atmosphere is dowright Pefect with a capitol P. Lot of peps don’t like the mask i like it. Strange for sure.
4.Halloween 5. I like how it connects straight too H4. Don Shanks done a good job playing Myer’s. The mask was ok.
5. Halloween H20. LL Cool J done a job playing a security guard being a rapper and all unlike Busta Rhymes in H8. Awful. Chris Durand played a good Myers. Interesting seeing all them different Myers masks in one flick. Story wasn’t half bad just wish they would of least kept it in Illinois instead of all the way out too Cali. Kinda pointless!
6.Halloween 3. I liked it. No Myers but a good fun Halloween Holiday Horror. Almost had a Goosebumps kinda feel going on. Masks were cool.
7.Halloween 6. Story was Ok. Cult thing ehhh…Tommy was wayyyyyyy out there than he should of been. Myers had a beer belly. Poor Dr.Loomis really depressed me seeing him so old and feeble.
8.Halloween 8. Start of movie was good. laurie killed ehhhhh no. Busta Rhymes made a mockery of the whole thing. Shocking Myers balls ehhhhh really. STUPID! Movie was CRAP.
9.RZ H1 was fairly ok. Yeah i know I’ve expressed my dislike for it but i can say i did like the mask not the brown greasy crappy coveralls. Look like something a redneck wears. Butcher Knife was corny looking too. As for Scouty Taylor Compton i could not stand her. Poor choice for Laurie Strode. Danielle Harris done fairly ok as Annie. I like bits and pieces of the movie.
10. RZ H2. God awful movie. Mask look like crap. I think RZ really tried too make Myers into Frankenstein. Especially him flipping that car over. Lol
I get why ppl hate the RZ films but I really feel like people overlook how good they are. Maybe Resurrection at least seems ok because it’s not too over-the-top but it just doesn’t do anything well and is just corny.
BTW this list is not my “favorites” ranking, I’m legitimately ranking them in terms of how good I think they are, my personal bias aside.
Omg H8 was a waste for sure. Them crazy kids running around the house like they were on crack. Myers appears an one girl screamed “he’s here” real loud. Omg i was just about embarrassed too say i went and seen it. It may very well be the worst of all the movies.Kinda hard too beat RZ H2 though
Still makes me sad people think it’s “hard to beat” for a bad movie when it has so much going for it; almost half the sequels are just bad carbon copies.
Not saying that being different automatically means being good, maybe I laid that on too thick in the video, but RZ’s 2 films have a lot of good filmmaking involved in them. I’m amazed at how quickly they grew on me after I had initially not liked them.
John Carpenter’s Halloween (Favorite movie of all time in general)
Halloween II - Great continuation.
Halloween IV - A great continuation of a great continuation.
Halloween III - I will never understand why people hate this. Enjoy the film for what it is, the movie had the balls to try to be original in story (and frankly a very creative Halloween story) you have to respect that while watching it. if you have the mindset of wanting to see Michael, watch a different movie lol.
Halloween: H20 - A good refresh for the franchise that got out of control. Sort of like the new nightmare in the elm street franchise, changing the course of events to bring back the seriousness.
Halloween 6 - Pretty bad, so little makes sense at all. I do love the atmosphere and feel of the movie, and granted it did have to ‘‘fix’’ what H5 set up, by following the thorn crap, so I give it a little credit.
Halloween 5 - Just dumb, I don’t even have interest in Jamie’s character at this point because of how little she is as a character in this one. H4 did it great, this one just seems like its clinging on for life for that story to continue. Loomis just seems burnt out as well
8: RZH1 - Not a fan of the backstory at all, also not a fan of remakes of movies that don’t need to be remade, especially with all the vulgar annoying characters.
RZH2 - Basically all of what I said about RZH1 but intensified.
Resurrection - This is the worst one on both a technical and personal perspective for me, just a pointless waste of effort (or lack thereof)
RZ H2 - Even rob zombie didn’t care when making this. I think the idea of myers being homeless makes sense if we’re going with a more realistic version of him but nothing else does make sense, its edgy, “symbolic” pulp that deserves to be forgotten
RZ H1 - It’s got the same problems as the second one, but less amplified. I watch this one sometimes for a good laugh.
H5 - Believe it or not, i actually think this one is worse than h6. instead of being entertaining and over the top like h6, its boring and forgettable.
H6 - This one is really dumb, pretty entertaining though and the mask looks cool
H3 - I like this movie a lot, it has a very original idea for a slasher movie of its time. I wish the franchise went in the anthology direction, we’d probably get more good movies out of it.
H4 - This one is almost as iconic and memorable as the first two (almost).
H2 - It’s damn near impossible for me to watch Halloween and not watch this after, great movie.
John Carpenter’s Halloween - Nothing to say that hasn’t been said already, its a classic film that every horror fan should watch and appreciate.
Halloween '78 - 10 out of 10.
Halloween II - 8 out of 10. Decent horror film but doesn’t live up to the original.
H2O - 1 out of 10. At least they tried to get things back on track.
Halloween 4, 5, 6, 8, Zombie 1 and 2 - All equally terrible. 0 out of 10
I’ll give 3 a pass just for nostalgia’s sake. Otherwise just a terrible film.
I’ve never liked it. Probably the worst portrayal of The Shape in the whole series. The mask, the extra-padding, it was a very generic performance. Felt more like a guy working in a haunted house trying to be scary. Watching Michael trying to balance on the rooftop then later climb onto the back of a pick-up trick were both cringe-worthy and out of character. Also hated that they carried on with the family angle.
Halloween 1 is no doubt number 1 & Halloween 2 is ranked second to me. Now number 3 is between Halloween H20 & Halloween 4. H4 had a great story Halloween atmosphere & music, H20 however did not have the classic Halloween music but it did manage to have a good story not much Halloween setting but felt like a Halloween movie to me & then H5 & H6 (didn’t like the thorn thing) then of course resurrection. I don’t even count RZ Halloween as Halloween movies.
RZ Halloween- Way too much vulgarity, unrealistic and extremely unlikable characters.
Halloween Resurrection - So bad, but at least I can get a laugh or two out of it unlike the Zombie films that just make me wanna hurl.
Halloween 5- has a couple decent moments ( Laundry chute scene ) but otherwise bad film.
Halloween 3 SOTW- I actually like this film okay. Not bad but obviously the black sheep of the series.
Halloween 6- I think this one is pretty decent. It has nice atmosphere and the cinematography is well done. Donald Pleasance is great as always.
Halloween H20- A pretty good movie. Nice to have Jamie back. The last few minutes are great. Too bad Donald Pleasance passed away before this film. I think he would have made it better. Don’t like the mask in this film at all though.
Halloween 4- Good movie. Has a nice October feel to it. Pleasance, Harris, and the girl who plays Rachel are all great characters. Once again my only gripe with this one is the mask.
Halloween - Excellent film. An absolute classic. Not much else to say.
Halloween 2- a bit of a controversial choice to put the sequel above the original, but I can’t help it. I love this film. The music, the look of the mask, and Dick Warlock’s performance are the reasons for putting this one above the original.
Halloween and Halloween 2 are easily my favorites of the franchise.
As much as H1 is the best and I always acknowledge it as my favorite horror film I do somehow hold H2 in a separate tier, personal favorite type category for many of the reasons I mentioned in the video. The appearance of the mask on Dick Warlock in H2 will forever be my favorite thing from the Halloween franchise.
Agreed. I actually wrote my comment before watching your video but it was nice hearing you say similar things about H2. I will admit that although I still don’t like the zombie films, I can see some of the points you made about them. Nice video by the way!
Feel like I almost want to do a solo review on H2 seeing as it’s my personal favorite. There’s just too much to get into it these films or it felt like even almost a full hour wasn’t enough time to properly review 10 films, lol.
Halloween 1(1978), Halloween 2(1981), H20 & Halloween 4. I don’t care for the rest. Halloween 5 had the goofy cops and cartoon music, Myers mansion, bad ending… Halloween 6 had the cult which didn’t seem to fit the Halloween story. I wish I hadn’t seen Resurrection. I never saw the Rob Zombie movies and don’'t plan on seeing them.
