He probably soaked the mask in acetone or kerosene to enlarge it before making the mold.
Some of you forget that not only was Terry suppose to foamfill the mask, the original idea was that Jay was gonna offer a small run of clay pressed copies of his kirk named the Jay Allen 75.
Basically screwed up during the recasting process by damaging Jay’s kirk so this run of Jay’s 75 replica never happened in the end.
At the same time Terry was also offering another mask known as the 30th anniversary mask which was a collab with NAG. Again this ended up in another fiasco.
Got it. Re-casting is Voldemort.
…I’ve heard the term “clay press” or “clay pressing” float around a bit and I always assumed that was some kind of technique for copying the likeness of a mask. Like, literally pressing the mask into a hunk of clay to capture the detail of the mask… to copy it… and to “re-cast” it. Anyway, enough of that. I don’t want to stir up any stuff.
Thanks for the info, guys!
Best,

Recasting in and of itself isn’t necessarily bad, but Terry did it without Jay’s knowledge or permission, which is. Most of the best Kirk/Myers replicas originated as a cast of a DP Kirk mask, but there’s also a lot of sculpting and retooling that goes on in between just recasting the mask, and creating the mold. So, in the end, you usually get an original sculpt that’s your own. That’s not what Terry does. He recasts other artist’s original sculpts (like Justin Mabry’s NMM78, which was an original sculpt that started as a Kirk recast) without their permission or knowledge, and then sells the direct recast as an original sculpt of his own, which it’s not.
Still blows my mind people still support him..
Mostly newer members who aren’t aware of all the shit he pulled, which is why I don’t mind seeing the topic dredged up now and again. It’s important for people to know what he did in the past, so they can choose not to support him in the future.
When did this happen? I bought a Warlock from CGP back in 2010 or 2011 and never knew about this until I joined here recently. That’s a damn shame about Jay’s original mask. Glad he was able to find another.
